Opened in 2002 Rowanfield Special School (Primary) is situated in North of Edinburgh and is part of the Craigroyston High School cluster. The school meets the additional support needs of children from 5-12 years of age with a wide range of barriers to learning. Pupils are placed in school following a referral to a professional assessment group (ERG).
The school is divided into three learning and teaching pods, each of which consists of three classrooms, a base room and a general-purpose area. The shared areas include the gym hall, art room, teacher resource room, family room, nurture classroom (The Zone), Relax Kids room with a sensory room, visiting therapists' room and the most amazing Soft Play!
There are 11 teaching staff (including HT, DHT & 2 PTs). They are supported by 15-17 support staff including Pupils Support Officers, Early Years Practitioner,
Pupil Support Workers, Administrator and Business Manager.
The staffing model reflects the degree of individual care and attention that our young people require to help meet their needs. The school has a multi-agency approach to working with the children and includes Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist, School Doctor, Nurse and Health Assistant and Community Mental Health Workers. In addition to this we work in partnership with Edinburgh Together, Social Work and other family support agencies.
