Senior Solicitor
Waverley Court

Salary: £67,457 - £80,569
Hours: 36 per week

The City of Edinburgh Council's in-house legal team has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Solicitor to join its Litigation team. Experience of housing cases, anti-social behaviour, and property litigation would be highly preferred. Experience of contentious litigation including handling cases in the Sheriff court and/or Judicial Reviews in the Court of Session would also be beneficial. Experience of education disputes including presenting cases at the First Tier Tribunal and Placing in School appeals would be desirable but not essential.. You will be fully supported in a collegiate environment and encouraged to develop a full range of legal and other skills.

The Litigation team provides advice to a wide range of Council services including Licensing, Housing, the Homeless Team, Social Work, Education and Bereavement Services. The role will have a focus on complex cases conducted either in court or Tribunal. You will also have the opportunity to assist in other areas of litigation work. The workload will be varied, challenging and interesting. Litigation and advocacy skills will be essential to this role. The applicant should have a positive attitude, a willingness to learn and the ability to work as part of a team to find solutions to complex problems.

The position is advertised as a full-time position, 36 hours per week, or such other hours as are agreed with the successful candidate. The Council is open to discussing flexible work arrangements.

We're committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings to us as an organisation.

This position is subject to a Standard disclosure check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

We are committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce where everyone feels valued and able to be their best. We particularly encourage applications from women for senior roles, as well as people from minority ethnic backgrounds, people with disabilities or neurodivergent people, care experienced people, carers and LGBT+ people across all levels of the organisation, all of whom are currently underrepresented. All applicants will be considered fairly based on skills and experience. Disabled and care-experienced applicants who meet the minimum job criteria will be guaranteed an interview.
