Senior Library Assistant 
12 hours per week, fixed term from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2028

The Library Service is seeking to appoint two sustainability champions to lead the development of our Libraries as Green Library Hubs. These exciting part-time posts are funded for two years and will play a key role in embedding sustainability across the service and supporting communities to engage with climate action and environmental awareness.
The successful candidates will lead the development and delivery of a range of sustainability projects across all our branch and mobile libraries. They will develop training and learning opportunities for library staff and volunteers, identify new funding and partnership opportunities, and work collaboratively with internal and external partners to maximise impact.
A particular focus will be placed on ensuring that sustainability initiatives reach rural and island communities through our mobile library and outreach services, while recognising and promoting the unique cultural and linguistic heritage of the Outer Hebrides, including opportunities to support and develop Gaelic-language resources, activities and engagement.
We are looking for two enthusiastic and experienced people with knowledge or experience of sustainability, climate action or environmental projects. The posts will work across the entire library service and could be based in any of our four main branch libraries.
The successful candidates will be proactive, innovative and community-focused, with the ability to build effective partnerships, engage a wide range of stakeholders, and inspire others to contribute towards a more sustainable future for our islands.
You must be educated to Highers level or equivalent level of experience, have experience of working with a range of IT programmes and software with experience of working in environmental, climate or sustainability fields. A basic understanding of the role of a library and information service and how it operates is required.  A comprehensive understanding of sustainability, climate and environmental issues is essential.

This post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme as a legal requirement of a regulated role with both Children and Protected Adults (Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme - mygov.scot).

The salary quoted is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance. Appointment to the post will be on the first point of the grade.
