Social Work Assistant (16/1274)
Stranraer/ West of Region
£16,237.50 - £17,316
Dumfries and Galloway Justice Social Work are seeking a Social Work Assistant to join our Early Interventions team across the region. This is an 18-hour post with the potential for additional hours, subject to budgetary demands.
This is an exciting opportunity for driven individuals to join our team as we continue to develop our approaches within Justice Social Work. While striving to create safer communities by helping reduce risk and harm, the successful candidate will be committed to promoting better outcomes for individuals that have committed an offence(s).
As well as assisting social workers in relation to their statutory duties, you will undertake a range of tasks to support individuals subject to Community Payback Orders (CPO). This will include direct work to support them to address their risks and needs, case management responsibilities and joint working with other agencies.
The role will also see you take a lead in the delivery of Structured Deferred Sentences, Diversion from Prosecution, and Bail Supervision. You will have responsibilities within the Court setting and be included in the Justice duty rota which operates during office hours.
Good communication and interpersonal skills are crucial in all aspects of the work. This includes your contact with individuals across the Justice service in addition to colleagues and staff from other agencies. Writing skills are critical with ability to use the record keeping system, communicate via email and letters, and the preparation of formal reports submitted to Court and the Scottish Prison Service.
Given the range of responsibilities, the ability to show initiative, flexibility and work independently is essential, as is the ability to work within the Council Code of Conduct and as part of a busy team. We work with people who have diverse needs and vulnerabilities. The ability to engage with people and build positive relationships is fundamental to our work. As the role evolves in line with service need and national policy, a willingness to learn and develop is crucial.
A current driving licence is an essential requirement of this post. However, if you have a disability which precludes you from holding a driving licence, consideration will be given if alternative transport can be arranged.
This post is considered as Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. From 28 February 2011, preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG scheme update check prior to formal offer of employment being made by Dumfries and Galloway Council.
Applicants who have been resident outside the UK within the last 5 years, if offered a position, in addition to a Disclosure Scotland Check, will be required to provide a completed police record check from the police authority in the country or countries in which they were resident.
