Teacher Additional Support for Learning (EAL/ Gypsy Traveller Service) (7/08916) (Temporary) (0.4FTE)

Dumfries

Unpromoted Teacher Scale £33,594 - £50,589

You will be required to work 14 hours per week.

Dumfries & Galloway is home to several children and young people, for whom English is not the first or home language.  They come from variety of backgrounds and are at different stages of language development, both in their first language and English. We describe these pupils as using English as an Additional Language, recognising that they are bi-lingual, possibly experiencing different cultures at home and at school.

Pupils are at all levels of proficiency, from children starting nursery and new arrivals in the early stages of English, to pupils in S5/6 planning to go to university. Each child is an individual and while some experience little difficulty, others risk being disadvantaged, if the language of the school is allowed to become a barrier to learning.

Teachers in this Service may also support pupils who are part of the Gypsy Traveller community, where they experience gaps in learning due to interrupted education.

Aims of this Service:

  • To support the learning and teaching of pupils with a first language other than English, in the Authority’s schools, so that they reach their full potential.
  • To improve access, ensure inclusion and raise achievement across the mainstream curriculum for EAL and Gypsy Traveller children.
  • To aid the process of assessment in schools.
  • To work in partnership with the EAL/ Gypsy Traveller learner’s own school and teachers.
  • To promote equality of opportunity for both EAL and Gypsy Traveller pupils.
