Dumfries & Galloway Council is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee HGV Technician to join our Vehicle Maintenance team. This is an exciting opportunity to earn while you learn, gaining valuable hands-on experience while working towards recognised industry qualifications.
As a Trainee HGV Technician, you will work alongside experienced technicians, learning how to inspect, service, maintain and repair the Council's extensive fleet of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs), plant machinery, specialist equipment and operational vehicles.

What You'll Be Doing
- Assisting qualified technicians with inspections, servicing and repairs.
- Learning fault diagnosis and repair techniques.
- Attending college and completing apprenticeship coursework.
- Maintaining accurate service and repair records.
- Developing practical skills across a wide range of vehicles and equipment.
- Gaining experience in the maintenance and safe operation of modern electric and low-emission vehicle technologies.
- Building the knowledge and experience needed to become a fully qualified HGV Technician.
What We're Looking For
Essential
- A genuine interest in vehicle maintenance, engineering or mechanics.
- Standard Grade / National 3 qualifications (or equivalent) in four or more subjects including English and Maths.
- Willingness to learn and attend college-based training.
- Positive attitude and commitment to developing technical skills. Practical experience gained through education, hobbies, work experience or college-based learning.
- Interest in engineering, LGVs, plant machinery or vehicle technology.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety principles.
