Job Description

Whilst undertaking this modern apprenticeship, the post holder will work to secure a fair and safe environment for people working and living in East Ayrshire by administration and enforcement of Trading Standards and Environmental Health law. This includes advising and assisting businesses, complaint investigations, business inspections, test transactions and targeted projects. At East Ayrshire Council we have three teams that form Regulatory Services: • Business Regulation (food law and occupational health and safety law), • Environmental Protection and Environmental Crime, and • Trading Standards. During this 2-year modern apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in illicit trade, doorstep crime, consumer product safety, age related sales, food safety, pest control, animal health & welfare and public health investigations. As part of this apprenticeship, you’ll undertake a SVQ Level 7 in Regulatory Services. This Apprenticeship will appeal to you if you’re interested in working in and pursuing a career in a regulatory environment. Placements are in the following areas: You will be based within the Trading Standards Service for the duration of your apprenticeship however there will be opportunities to work within our Environmental Health and Licensing Sections. What do I need? You don’t need to have any previous experience although you should have Maths and a Science related subject (preferably Physics or Biology) at National 5 level qualifications at a Band A – C and a Higher in English. Having Higher Maths and a Higher in a science related subject is also desirable. During the selection process we’ll look for you to demonstrate the key values of East Ayrshire Council, you’ll need to flexible, approachable, caring and empowered and have a willingness to learn. In accordance with Government Guidelines, you’ll need to be aged 16-24 (at the point of starting the apprenticeship) or if you are disabled or care experienced, you’ll need to be aged between 16-29 (at the point of starting the apprenticeship).

Requirements

To apply for this post you must be a resident of East Ayrshire and aged between 16-24 OR up to age 29 if you have a disability or are care experienced. During this 2-year modern apprenticeship you will have the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in illicit trade, doorstep crime, consumer product safety, age related sales, food safety, pest control, animal health & welfare and public health investigations. As part of this apprenticeship, you’ll undertake a SVQ Level 7 in Regulatory Services at Ayrshire College. This Apprenticeship will appeal to you if you’re interested in working in and pursuing a career in a regulatory environment. The rate of pay is £12.00 per hour.

Responsibilities

The workstyle for this post has been designated as ‘flexible’. This means that due to the nature of the role it is expected that 50-79% of the working week will be office-based. You would be able to work at different/multiple locations, including working from home or travelling directly from home to external appointments approximately 1-2 days per week.
