Job Summary

Please note salary will be pro-rated for employees working term-time.

This post is temporary.

Work Pattern: Monday - Friday 0830 - 1600.

This is a unique post as it’s funded through the DWP Access to Work scheme. You will be working giving direct Classroom support to an individual teacher for the duration of this temporary post.

The appointment of Classroom Assistants is an essential ingredient of the Council’s drive to raise pupil attainment.

Working during school term time, you will assist the teacher with non-teaching duties including administration, supervision of pupils, preparation of teaching materials and under the direction of the class teacher provide support for learning. As part of the role you will assist the teacher in providing support to children and young people with additional support needs within our school. This will include a range of supports to meet the requirements of both individuals and groups.

Literate, numerate and with excellent interpersonal skills, you will be able to demonstrate a particular ability to relate to children that has been developed through dealing with them in a controlled environment. Ideally you will be creative, highly motivated and able to work on your own initiative. We also require someone with highly attuned IT skills. You will need to demonstrate excellent literacy and communication skills to meet the requirements of this post.

You will have a nurturing and personable manner and a proven capacity to establish positive relationships. Experience of working with children and young people with barriers to learning, challenging behaviour and additional support needs and an interest in their development will be advantageous.

When required and in order to support the teacher you will provide supervision for pupils out-with the classroom e.g. in the playground, corridors, dining area, during PE and organised educational excursions.

A relevant qualification in childcare or similar is desirable e.g. NCFE Initial Training for Classroom Assistants, an NVQ Teaching Assistants Level 2 and 3; and an HNC in Childcare and Education or any degree level education.

Where the post you are applying for is considered Regulated Work under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act, 2007, successful candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme, or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check, prior to confirmation of employment being made by East Dunbartonshire Council.

Please note, successful candidates will be expected to meet the cost of the relevant check which will be deducted from the successful candidate’s first salary payment.

In specific circumstances the payment could be deducted in instalments from an employee’s wages following commencement of employment. Approval in such circumstances will be made by HR Services Lead.

Should an employee leave in advance of the payment being deducted, the full amount will be deducted from the employee’s final salary.

The criteria outlined above will apply to existing employees of East Dunbartonshire Council who apply for roles for which a PVG/Disclosure check is required.
