We have an exciting opportunity for a Chargehand Roadworker to join a flexible team of professionals in delivering a high-quality service within East Lothian Council Roads Services team. We are looking for a self-motivated individual who has knowledge and experience in the maintenance and construction of a road network.

You will lead in the maintenance and construction of roads, footways and drains, or undertake specialist tasks associated with the construction and maintenance of roads and drainage systems (which may include driving of vehicles required specialist driving skills and/or the operation of powered heavy plant). You will provide first line supervision for a work group/squad undertaking road maintenance activities by:

  • Organising and allocate work of a squad on a priority basis to complete work in accordance with the instructions.
  • To organise, ensuring the health, safety and welfare of the squad.
  • Ensuring that work is carried out in a proper manner, complying with ELC Quality System and specifications.
  • Ensuring that ELC policies and procedures in relation to conduct are complied with.
  • Ensuring that all relevant records/paperwork are completed correctly and on time.
  • In consultation with a Roads Supervisor, programme the work of the squad on a daily basis and over the following two week period.

The candidate will need to be confident with good verbal and written communication skills who can quickly establish good working relationships. You will also need to be IT proficient as digital technology is used

Job Details

To assist in the maintenance, construction and repair of roads, footpaths and drainage. Carry out weather emergency duties to ensure the safety of road conditions. Undertake both manual and driving tasks necessary to carry out the above.

Job Requirements

Relevant Qualifications
SVQ Level 2, National Certificate, Highers or equivalent in a related discipline, i.e. Winter Maintenance.

Driving Licence
A full current driving licence is essential to carry out the duties of this post.
