Make a tangible difference with your engineering expertise

If you’re a professional engineer considering a career move — perhaps seeking greater purpose, long‑term impact, or a healthier balance — this role offers the chance to apply your technical skills in a way that directly improves communities.

As a Senior Roads Design Officer, you’ll play a pivotal role in shaping how people move safely and sustainably around the Falkirk area. From road safety improvements to the delivery of new active travel routes, your work will be visible, meaningful, and long‑lasting.

Why this role may appeal to you

  • Real-world impact – Directly involved in projects that will be used by the public
  • Project ownership – Involvement across the full lifecycle: feasibility, design, procurement, site supervision and delivery
  • Variety and challenge – A diverse portfolio including junction improvements, road safety schemes and active travel infrastructure
  • Stability with flexibility – Permanent employment, hybrid working and flexi‑time
  • A chance to re-focus – Focus on quality, safety and outcomes
  • Leadership opportunity – Mentor others, influence decisions and deputise at senior level without losing hands‑on engineering involvement

This role provides a rewarding career where your experience is genuinely valued.

The role

You’ll lead and contribute to the design and delivery of roads and active travel projects across the Council area. This includes:

  • Feasibility studies, detailed design and contract preparation
  • Project and budget management
  • Site supervision during construction
  • Liaison with elected members, the public, consultants, contractors and internal stakeholders
  • Supporting and mentoring colleagues within the team
  • Deputising for the Roads, Bridges & Flooding Co‑ordinator when required

You’ll be trusted to work independently, while being part of a supportive, experienced team.

What we’re looking for

  • A minimum  of HNC in Civil Engineering (or a relevant equivalent discipline)
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (or working towards it)
  • Experience or transferable knowledge in infrastructure design, delivery or asset management
  • A solid understanding of health & safety and relevant legislation
  • Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with stakeholders and the public
  • An organised, professional approach with the ability to manage competing priorities

We welcome applicants who may not have worked in a local authority before but can demonstrate strong engineering judgement and a willingness to learn the public-sector context.

What we offer

  • Hybrid working and flexi‑time to support work–life balance
  • Local Authority pension scheme
  • 27 days annual leave, rising to 34 days, plus 8 public holidays
  • Ongoing training and development programmes
  • A supportive, forward‑thinking organisation with a strong community focus
  • Access to a wide range of employee benefits and discounts
