Job Details

An opportunity has arisen to join the Youth Intervention Service, a recently established team working with children and care-experienced young people in conflict with the law and / or exhibiting high-risk behaviour.

Youth Intervention Service works with children who have been transferred from locality Children and Families teams, children referred from Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration or the Youth Offender Management Group where there is an assessed or known serious risk of offending in terms of frequency or harm.

All Justice Social Work Reports and case responsibility for Court disposals for 16- and 17-year-olds are also held by YIS, as well as any young person remanded in secure care from the Court. YIS holds case responsibility for Care Experienced young people entitled to statutory Aftercare support who are at risk of contact with or are actively involved with the Justice System for both Aftercare support and Justice case management responsibility.

The team therefore works within Children and Families, Aftercare and Justice frameworks and there is an expectation you will fulfil all of these roles. Applicants should have some experience of working within these areas and a desire to work with adolescents and their families.

The role of the Social Worker will include:

  • Carrying a caseload of children and young adults in conflict with the law.
  • This will reflect your grade within the team in terms of complexity and / or risk management level.
  • Responsible for supporting planning for young people and work collaboratively with a range of multi-agency partners to achieve positive outcomes for young people and families.
  • Undertaking designated duty days which will require Court attendance and absence cover.
  • Preparation for and attendance at meetings such as Team Around the Child, Risk Management Meetings, Looked After Meetings, Core Groups, IRD’s, Emergency Planning meetings, Pathway Planning meetings and Community Payback Order.
  • Contributing to the development of the team.
  • Representing Youth Intervention Service in strategy meetings and planning, i.e. knife crime in schools / local communities.
  • Attending Youth Offender Management Group as a Social Work representative in Early and Effective Intervention strategies.
  • Supporting the development and delivery of planned group-work and ad-hoc group-work targeting group disruption.
  • Triaging referrals and providing consultation or co-ordinating intervention from YIS to children remaining open to other parts of the service
  • Contributing to work which will support the implementation of the Promise in Fife and the Children and Families Strategy 2025-2028.

This position involves lone working and requires an ability to travel throughout Fife.

The Person

  • Experience of working with young people or young adults in conflict with the law and/or young people leaving care.
  • Experience of both child and adult protection processes.
  • Knowledge of, and skills in, using IT and basic audio-visual technology and/or be enthusiastic about developing these.
  • Organisational skills, ability to manage and prioritise workload, experience of making effective decisions.
  • Ability to evidence continuous professional development.
  • Ability to be innovative and be creative.
  • Team working skills (work together).
  • Ability to travel throughout Fife.
  • Familiarity with Justice, Children and Family and Aftercare frameworks.

Before confirming to your appointment, you will be required to obtain Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland and become a member of the relevant PVG scheme.

As this role requires SSSC registration, you will have three months to apply for registration.

If appointed, you must start your application as soon as possible so you're registered within the required six months.

If you need to achieve a qualification to maintain your SSSC membership, information will be provided if you are appointed. You must ensure you complete the qualification within the specified timeframe.
