Job Description

Glasgow Life is looking for a Librarian (Special Collections) to join us on a part time, fixed term contract for a period up to two years. As Librarian (Special Collections) you will be joining our in-demand Special Collections department, based in the Mitchell Library.

The role
You will work as part of the Special Collections team managing, developing and making accessible the Library Collections at The Mitchell for the people of Glasgow and its visitors. Reporting to the Principal Librarian in the Museums and Collections service area, you will undertake and support a range of collections-related activity and programmes in line with Glasgow Life's strategic objectives, policies and governance obligations. You will be working collaboratively with Library and Museums colleagues in delivering high quality library, information and family history services from The Mitchell, supporting the ongoing management and development of the special collections per se, and supporting the operational functions of The Mitchell Library.
The candidate
If you’re interested in joining us as a Librarian in Special Collections, you’ll need:
• Essential: First Degree or postgraduate qualification in Library and Information Science, or ACLIP (or equivalent professional body).
• Essential: relevant experience in collections management and development, and awareness of collections care.
• Essential: relevant experience of delivering a collections-focused range of library and information services with high standards of customer care.
• Essential: excellent inter-personal, and written, verbal and digital communication skills.
• Essential: flexible approach to work pattern including evening/weekend shift patterns, and ability to work independently and collaboratively. This post is 17.5 hours FTE on a fixed term contract for 2 years.
• Desirable: experience of working with a wide range of colleagues across teams, partners, and customers
• Desirable: experience of family and local history services and of unique and distinctive collections
• Desirable: MCLIP

Some of our roles are currently piloting hybrid working, with teams working between the office and home. Your line manager will agree these days with you. This balance enables you to continue much-needed collaborative working.
The Mitchell Library has great links to public transport and parking nearby.
This role is for 17.5 hours per week. The working pattern would be: Wednesday 9am-5pm. Thursday 12noon-8pm and alternate Friday/Saturday 9am-5pm.
