Job Description
To provide support, both direct and indirect, for deaf children and young people. Apply appropriate communication methods to enable access to information and the curriculum, and to promote wellbeing, inclusion and independence.
This is a peripatetic post and will require the post holder to be mobile and work in more than one school across Moray and require the use of a car.
Responsibilities
- Support learning and teaching activities under the direction of the Principal Teacher of the Deaf and Visual Education Team, and Teacher of Deaf Children and Young People (TOD).
- Provide communication support and modify and adapt curriculum content for children and young people who are deaf.
- Attend to the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people who are deaf.
- Support children and young people and Education staff in the effective use and maintenance of technology necessary to access learning.
- Support development of skills for independence in learning, life and work.
The Individual
- Experience of working in an educational setting with children and young people with additional support needs
- 4 SQA National 5s or equivalent (including English and Maths)
- Signature level 2 or SCQF level 5 BSL or a commitment to acquire this in the first two years of employment
- Full driving licence
- Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
- Ability to consistently adhere to professional confidentiality
- Ability to work flexibly using their own initiative and as part of a team
- Evidence of embedded solution oriented thinking and practice
- Effective use of ICT
- An understanding of, and commitment to, the ethos of inclusion
- You will be expected to travel efficiently between various work locations within Moray to meet the operational requirements of the Service. Due to the rural nature of Moray this is normally undertaken by use of a car.
- Ability to interact with empathy and tolerance and to respond positively to deaf children and young people
- Evidenced ability to build and maintain effective empowering relationships with children and young people.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a demanding environment
- Responsive and adaptable to meet the changing needs of the Service
- Work peripatetically across Moray.
- Transporting resources required for the job.
This post is considered to be a ‘Regulated Role’ under the Disclosure (Scotland) Act 2020. Under the Act it is a legal requirement for an individual undertaking a regulated role with children or protected adults to be a member of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme.
Therefore the successful candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check prior to any formal offer of employment being made by Moray Council.
