37 hours per week, Monday – Thursday 8am - 4pm, Friday 8am - 3.30pm, Saturday 8am - 4pm (when on the rota)

We are looking for a Garage Mechanic to join our team at the Council’s Hatston Garage.

The repair, replacement and general maintenance of a wide range of vehicles and plant for example, HGV, LGV, vans and cars through to specialist vehicles such as fixed body tippers, gritters, refuse collection and airfields fire tenders as well as a wide range of operated and non-operated plant and equipment.

Duties include carrying out planned inspections, repairs, pre-MOT, replacement and maintenance for all mechanical, electrical and electronic parts, as well as fault finding, fabrication work on vehicles, plant and equipment where needed.

You will be personally responsible for completing detailed inspection reports, records for any parts and materials used as well as recording that the tasks are undertaken through recording the information on the digital fleet management system.

Specialist driving and key holding responsibilities. Specialist driving skills are those required to operate complex vehicles (i.e. in size or of unusual or awkward shape or with devices other than for forward/reverse motion) in unusually or difficult or confined situations requiring manoeuvring skills and judgements not associated with ordinary driving conditions. In exceptional circumstances these skills may be exercised in respect of vehicles not requiring an HGV licence.

Key holding responsibilities include the security of the buildings and compounds and responding to fire and burglar alarms. You will also be required to use IT systems and diagnostic systems.

Whilst undertaking the duties within this role, you are responsible for ensuring you comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act and any associated legislation or regulation, Acts of Parliament, Statutory Instruments and any other legal requirements, Codes of Practice, technical guidance and established local authority procedures.

You should have a good general standard of education, including literacy and numeracy and be trained and certified in mechanical engineering, by a recognised body such as City and Guilds, SQA or SCOTVEC.

A full driving licence to drive vehicles in the UK under categories CE, C, C1 & C1E (previously Class 1 & 2 HGV Licence) is essential

A shift allowance payment is included in the salary and generous holiday and pension entitlement. You will be required to work on Saturdays on an approved rota. When required to work a Saturday you will get a weekday off, agreed in advance.

You must be able to undertake standby duties as required. This will involve out of hours working, for which an appropriate overtime or standby payment will be made.
