Orkney lies approximately nine miles north of the Scottish mainland and is home to the smallest local authority in Scotland. There is a strong cultural life and visitors world-wide are attracted to the scenery, history and archaeology. Orkney is home to a community of about 22,000 residents and among its many attributes offers a safe environment, excellent educational, recreational and health facilities, a community spirit, and an exceptional quality of life with reasonably priced housing.
Kirkwall Grammar School is one of two six-year secondary schools in Orkney with a catchment area covering the town of Kirkwall, the East Mainland and many of the outer isles. The current school roll is approx. 850 pupils. Almost all secondary aged pupils with additional support needs in the county attend their local community school. Kirkwall Grammar School however is additionally and specifically resourced to meet the needs of young people with the most complex needs.
Kirkwall Grammar School is a state of the art building, which is both welcoming and visually stunning, sitting in the heart of Kirkwall. Within the campus is the Papdale halls of Residence, which accommodates students from the outer isles during the week.
Kirkwall Grammar school is regarded as one of the best appointed secondary schools in Scotland and includes community sports facilities and the new Orkney Theatre, both of which are accessed by students during the school day. The school also has access to the local leisure centre which includes a swimming pool.
Kirkwall Grammar School students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning and to take advantage of the variety of wider achievement opportunities available to enhance their learning experience. Pupils also benefit from the school’s strong partnership with our local college UHI Orkney, which provides a wide range of additional curriculum choices for senior phase students. The School also enjoys a very strong and supportive relationship with its Parent Council.
