Orkney Islands Council is looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner to the post of Head Teacher at Stromness Primary School. We are seeking an energetic and committed primary school leader with good strategic leadership and management skills, who will, with the support of an enthusiastic and dedicated staff team, continue to lead, grow and develop the school for learning and teaching in the 21st century.
Orkney lies eight miles north of the Scottish mainland and is the smallest Local Authority in Scotland. There is a strong cultural life and visitors world-wide are attracted to the scenery, history and archaeology. Orkney is home to a cosmopolitan community of about 20,000 residents and, among its many attributes, offers a safe environment, excellent educational and recreational facilities, a community spirit and exceptional quality of life, with reasonably priced housing.
The expected school roll for session 2023/24 is 132 in six mainstream classes, from P1-7. An Early Learning and Childcare (ELCC) setting is also based in the school. This is managed by an ELCC manager and currently caters for 44 children from 2- 5 years. Stromness Primary School has a committed team of 22 staff who are keen to continue to meet the needs of the children and develop the school further. The school is well supported by the Parent Council and wider community in Stromness.
Applicants must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland and be able to demonstrate that they have, through both experience and professional development, met the criteria in the Standard for Headship. As Head Teacher you will be part of the Education Service management team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of education in Orkney as a whole.
This post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.
