Orkney Islands Council is looking for a Roads Services Technician to support the Team Manager, Roads Support and Roads Design Officer in the delivery of a full range of services in support of the Council as Roads Authority, with particular reference to applying the principles of the Council’s Roads Asset Management Plan and Roads Management and Maintenance Plan.
The post holder will develop drawings and other contract documentation for road improvement and asset replacement projects and assist in the supervision, monitoring and measurement of works. They will lead in the undertaking of traffic counts and analyse and report on the data collected. They will also lead in the maintenance and validation of the National Street Gazetteer and the management and validation of data contained in the Scottish Road Works Register.
Experience of civil engineering or roads related projects. together with extensive practical and relevant experience of working in a Roads environment are essential. Detailed knowledge of regulations, specifications and materials pertaining to construction and maintenance of roads, with extensive knowledge of CDM regulations and health and safety legislation are also required.
You should have excellent communication and organisational skills, as well as experience of using relevant IT systems including Office, Pavement Management Systems, AutoCAD, databases, and GIS mapping.
You should hold a qualification at SCQF 6/7, i.e., SVQ3, National Certificate, Foundation Apprenticeship, Advanced Higher, Scottish Baccalaureate, HNC, Certificate of Higher Education in an engineering or construction related subject, or have a minimum of 3 years previous relevant experience.
Membership of a professional institution, such as CIHT or ICE, is desirable.
You will be expected to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney, including the outer islands, to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
