Main Purpose of the Role
Working within Perth & Kinross Council is more than a job, it's about being part of an organisation that puts people at the heart of all we do and provides opportunities to make a real difference by enhancing every life we touch.
We currently have the following opportunity:
Graduate Apprentice Technician, 2 Posts - PKC14328
£27,010 - £42,252
Roads Service, Ruthvenfield Depot, Inveralmond, Perth
Build your career while helping to shape and maintain the roads and infrastructure used by communities across Perth and Kinross Council. This structured career-grade opportunity combines supported workplace learning, part-time study and practical experience across the Roads Service.
This role gives you the chance to earn a salary while studying towards a recognised Civil Engineering qualification and gaining practical workplace experience.
Through our structured Graduate Technician programme, you will follow a clear, supported career pathway and take on greater responsibility as your skills and knowledge develop.
Working across Roads Service teams, you will gain hands-on experience in different areas of the profession and learn from experienced Technicians, Engineers and Roads Maintenance Officers. This will help you build the technical knowledge, practical skills and confidence needed for a long-term career in civil engineering and roads infrastructure.
You will complete supervised technical training and practical activities across Roads Service teams, including the Roads Maintenance Partnership, Traffic and Network, and partner organisation Tayside Contracts.
You will help design and deliver road maintenance projects, including carriageway and footway resurfacing, traffic calming and active travel schemes. You will also gain experience with the Road Network Management team, supporting road works coordination and inspection duties across Perth and Kinross Council’s road network. There will also be opportunities to learn about the contracting side of the partnership through Tayside Contracts.
The successful candidate will be based at Ruthvenfield Depot, Inveralmond, Perth. The role includes both office and site work, with office attendance required to support learning and knowledge sharing within the team.
You will work collaboratively with colleagues, contractors, stakeholders and members of the public.
You will keep evidence of your learning and progress against the objectives of the career-grade programme.
You will attend university part-time and apply your academic learning in the workplace.
You will be responsible for managing your workload alongside your academic studies.
There may also be opportunities to take part in the year-round roads standby rota, supporting winter service preparation and reactive flood resilience across Perth and Kinross. Participation in the formal standby rota is optional.
Please note, we are currently unable to offer sponsorship for this post.
Skills & Experience Required
You must meet the entry requirements for a part-time Honours Degree in Civil Engineering. These will be checked as part of the recruitment process.
We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in civil engineering, roads and public infrastructure, and a commitment to completing both the academic qualification and workplace development programme.
You should have good numeracy, communication, digital and problem-solving skills, along with a reliable and organised approach to work.
You should also be able to work well with others and contribute positively to a team. This may have been developed through school, college or university projects, sports teams, volunteering, clubs or part-time work.
Experience or familiarity with AutoCAD and GIS systems would be useful, but is not essential as training will be provided.
The successful candidate will have a positive attitude, be keen to learn and be open to feedback and ongoing development.
You will be expected to build effective working relationships, listen to different views, share ideas and support colleagues to achieve shared goals.
As your knowledge and experience grow, you will be encouraged to take on more responsibility, use your initiative and recognise when guidance or approval is needed.
You must have a valid driving licence as this post requires you to travel to a variety of locations across Perth and Kinross.
