You’ll lead a team which enforces the full range of Trading Standards, Animal Welfare and Dog Control legislation.

This role offers genuine professional development, including opportunities to contribute to the governance of many key areas of council work. Part of the role will involve advising and working with senior management.

Perth and Kinross Council has an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic and suitably experienced and qualified Trading Standards professional who wants to take the next step in their professional development.

We are looking for a Principal Officer-Trading Standards who will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision and management of the Trading Standards, Animal Welfare and Dog Control teams and to ensure the delivery of the Council’s statutory obligations regarding the delivery of all Trading Standards, Animal Welfare and Dog Control legislation.

In addition the postholder will also fulfil the statutory role as the Council’s Chief Inspector of Weights and Measures.

You will ensure that an efficient and effective service is provided and that all work is carried out on time and within pre-set deadlines.

You will develop, monitor, maintain and revise, as necessary, work programmes, procedures, policies, work instructions and risk assessments relevant to the work of the three teams.

This position is politically restricted under the Local Government Officers (Political Restrictions) Amendment Regulations 1998 (as amended). This means that you are prevented from taking part in certain political activities.

Skills & Experience Required

To join us, you’ll have experience leading a team in an enforcement environment, an enthusiastic approach and you will be able to produce accurate work and perform against tight deadlines.

Appointment requires the Diploma in Trading Standards/ Level 2 in the current CTSI Qualification Framework (or equivalent such as current CTSI QP Stage 2), including qualification to act as the Council’s Chief Inspector of Weights & Measures.

You must have a valid UK driving licence as this post requires you to travel to a variety of locations across Perth and Kinross

The successful candidate will have considerable enforcement experience within Trading Standards and will have experience leading investigations and experience of a supervisory or lead officer role.

A flexible, team‑focused attitude is essential. 

You will have good written skills with the ability to work accurately against tight timescales.

You will have very good interpersonal skills and a positive and motivated outlook.

You will be able to work accurately against tight timescales.
