Main Purpose of the Role

Working within Perth & Kinross Council is more than a job, it's about being part of an organisation that puts people at the heart of all we do and provides opportunities to make a real difference by enhancing every life we touch.

We currently have the following opportunity:

Trading Standards Officer - PKC13597
£47,601 - £50,773
Pullar House, Perth

Perth and Kinross blends the energy of an historic city with the space and scenery of rural Scotland—offering real quality of life alongside a diverse workload.

Join a small, committed team protecting consumers and supporting fair, safe trading across one of Scotland’s most varied and rewarding areas.

We’re looking for a motivated, positive officer ready to make an impact.

You’ll investigate unfair trading practices, lead on specialist areas of law, carry out sampling and test purchasing, and work closely with partner agencies. You’ll also provide clear, confident advice to local businesses and consumers.

This role offers genuine professional development, including opportunities to take on complex investigations, lead projects, and occasionally stand in for the Principal Officer.

With the benefit of hybrid working but based at the Perth and Kinross Council Offices at Pullar House in Perth this role offers an enthusiastic candidate the chance to work in an area that provides a mix of urban and rural work which covers all aspects of Trading Standards work.

The main responsibilities of the role are:

  1. Carry out the general tasks associated with the role of a Trading Standards Officer
    e. g. the investigation of alleged breaches of criminal trading law, intelligence led investigation of unfair trading practices and product sampling/test purchasing.
  2. Take on the lead officer role in a particular area of trading standards law.
  3. Carry out the duties of an Inspector of Weights and Measures.
  4. Provide advice and guidance to local businesses and consumers in respect of the criminal and civil obligations under trading standards legislation.
  5. Carry out national/local enforcement projects and community planning initiatives.
  6. Attend meetings on behalf of the Service and the Council as required.
  7. Work closely with other agencies and/or neighbouring authorities to facilitate  joint working arrangements.
  8. Adhere to the Council’s policies and procedures.

Please note, we are currently unable to offer sponsorship for this post.

Skills & Experience Required

To join us, you’ll have experience in an enforcement environment, and you will be able to produce accurate work against deadlines.

Appointment requires the Diploma in Trading Standards/ Level 2 in the current CTSI Qualification Framework (or equivalent) including qualification as an Inspector of Weights & Measures.

The postholder must be fully qualified as a Trading Standards Officer (DTS, CTSI QF, or equivalent) with the ability to act as an Inspector of Weights and Measures.

You must have a valid UK driving licence as this post requires you to travel to a variety of locations across Perth and Kinross.

As an enthusiastic and organised person you will be able to work accurately to set timetables.

You will have an ability to work with people at all levels within the council and in other organisations and businesses.

You will have experience of organising investigations and projects and an ability to prioritise.

You will also have experience of working in a regulatory environment.  While prior experience is an advantage, just as important is a positive attitude and a wish to get on so this post while ideal for an experienced officer is also a superb opportunity for a keen newly qualified officer who wishes to gain a broad experience in a varied enforcement environment and to expand their knowledge and level of skill.  The role also offers the chance to specialise in a specific area of Trading Standards work.

There will be many opportunities to expand skills and knowledge and the postholder will be encouraged to gain further experience, training and qualifications.
