You will take the lead role in developing and delivering a therapeutic groupwork programme for children and their mothers who have experienced domestic abuse. The Reconnection Project will principally use the CEDAR programme to engage women and children who have experienced domestic abuse, however a more general groupwork programme will run in parallel to this which will focus on developing women’s confidence, building capacity and encouraging and supporting women as they rebuild their lives following abuse.

As a member of the Women and Children First team you will be responsible for identifying participants for the mothers’ and children’s groupwork programme. You will also provide training for groupwork facilitators from local agencies and awareness raising activities to both multi-agency and community participants. You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team, with particular links to health and educational services in a variety of settings. Individual support to women and children will also be a part of the role.

A professional qualification in social work, community work or other relevant profession qualification is essential. It is also essential that you have undertaken post qualifying training in either domestic and/or sexual abuse awareness. It would be advantageous if you have completed a level of child protection training.

You must have workplace experience in working with women and/or children and it would be an advantage if this experience included working with those affected by abuse. It is essential that you have effective skills in facilitating group work. You will also have experience of managing resources including financial resources and of supporting the learning and practice of colleagues and partner agencies, including delivering staff training.

You must have an understanding of the gendered analysis of domestic abuse and impact on women and children and in addition of how therapeutic interventions can support women and children. You should also have an understanding of the principles and practices of community development, capacity building, partnership working and be able to demonstrate experience of this within in a multi-agency setting. You will have knowledge of child protection and vulnerable adult policies and procedures and have effective organisational, report writing, presentation and IT skills. In addition, you should have effective written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate and engage with children, young people and their mothers. You should also be able to use a range of support skills for the benefit of children and women affected by domestic abuse and be committed to working in an inclusive manner. Confidence when working with the public at training or awareness events is also essential.

You must be able to work to deadlines and be able to work flexible hours as on occasion some evening and weekend working may be required.
