Fair Trading & Licensing Officer
An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Communities & Public Protection Service. Reporting to the Lead Officer (Trading Standards), you will play a key role in delivering a range of functions that contribute to both Corporate and Community Planning objectives.
This is a challenging and rewarding role within a local authority environment. Working as part of the Trading Standards & Licensing Team, you will primarily be responsible for activities aimed at controlling the supply of tobacco and nicotine vapour products. This will include conducting underage sales test-purchasing exercises, carrying out compliance inspections, and undertaking targeted interventions to disrupt potential criminal activity. As part of this work, you will be required to supervise young people participating in test purchase operations.
As a Fair Trading & Licensing Officer, you will also support the delivery of the team's wider consumer protection functions. Duties will include but are not limited to Investigating consumer complaints and business practices, exercising enforcement powers in accordance with the Council's Integrated Enforcement Policy, preparing reports and submitting offences to the Procurator Fiscal where appropriate, and providing advice and guidance to members of the public, businesses, elected members, Council services and partner agencies.
It is essential you have relevant experience in Trading Standards/Licensing, enforcement and a willingness to work towards the Diploma in Trading Standards (or statutory equivalent), experience in multi-disciplinary project work and experience of partnership working and liaising with various agencies.
You must have the ability to interpret new legislation, effective reporting, communication and interpersonal skills aswell as the ability to deal with a wide range of customers and clients with differing backgrounds.
It is also essential you are a capable communicator and negotiator who applies sound judgement and reasoning to investigation/advice processes, and you have the ability to work on own initiative whilst balancing team, service and corporate priorities.
A full driving licence is desirable.
Participation in the Communities & Public Protection out-of-hours standby service is essential
