Role Purpose
Join the Scottish Borders Council Instrumental Music Service and help inspire the next generation of young musicians. We are seeking a passionate and skilled Percussion Instructor to take up a rewarding part-time post, working across five secondary schools in the Scottish Borders.
This is a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact on pupils from S1 to S6, delivering high-quality, engaging 1-to-1 weekly lessons that nurture musical ability, confidence, and creativity. You will play a key role in supporting young people at all stages of their musical journey—from complete beginners through to advanced performers preparing for assessments and performances.
Beyond individual tuition, you will be instrumental in developing and leading percussion ensembles, fostering teamwork, discipline, and a love of collaborative music-making. This aspect of the role allows you to shape vibrant ensemble experiences that contribute to school life and the wider community, including concerts and events.
We are looking for an enthusiastic educator with strong percussion expertise, excellent communication skills, and a genuine commitment to inclusive music education. The ability to motivate and inspire pupils, adapt teaching approaches to suit individual needs, and build positive relationships within schools is essential.
Working as part of a dedicated and supportive team within the Instrumental Music Service, you will benefit from professional collaboration, ongoing development opportunities, and the chance to contribute to a well-regarded regional music provision.
If you are driven by a belief in the transformative power of music education and want to shape young musicians’ futures in a dynamic and fulfilling role, we would love to hear from you.
We are seeking to appoint a suitable candidate ready to start in August at the start of the new academic year 26-27.
Essential
• Relevant music qualification (e.g., degree, diploma, or equivalent experience).
• Experience in ensemble direction or/and group teaching.
• Skilled in both orchestral to band contexts (tuned and non-tuned)
• A current driving licence and use of a vehicle is an essential requirement of this post. * If you have a disability which precludes you from holding a drivers licence, Scottish Borders Council will take into account its responsibility to make reasonable adjustments to allow for your disability. Should it be possible to make such an adjustment in order that you can undertake the travel responsibilities of the post, this will be taken into account in consideration for this role.
