Role Purpose

Roads Operatives


Locations: Duns, Newtown, Kelso, Hawick, Galashiels and Eshiels (Peebles)


We are seeking a number of motivated and reliable Roads Operatives to join our Roads team across the Scottish Borders. These roles are key to supporting the delivery of an efficient and effective roads service in line with planned maintenance programmes.


The Role

As a Roads Operative, you will undertake a wide range of general roads maintenance activities, contributing to keeping the area’s infrastructure safe and well maintained. Working as part of a team, you will ensure all works are completed safely, on time and to a high standard.


Key Duties and Responsibilities


- Carrying out general roads maintenance work including:
- Drainage works
- Concreting
- Kerbing and flagging
- Blacktop and surfacing works
- Assisting with winter maintenance duties, including gritting and adverse weather response
- Operating tools and plant safely and effectively
- Ensuring all work complies with health and safety requirements
- Supporting colleagues to meet service delivery targets and maintenance schedules


What We Are Looking For

- A reliable and hardworking individual with a strong team ethic
- Experience in roads or construction maintenance (desirable but not essential, as training may be provided)
- A positive attitude and willingness to undertake a variety of tasks
- Commitment to high standards of workmanship and safety
- Flexibility to support winter maintenance and emergency response when required

Essential

A basic education (Numeracy and literacy)


Certified relevant machinery and plant use qualification/s (i.e. Lantra certificates, NPTC, SVQ 1, CSCS, CPCS or NPORS cards) or obtained within reasonable timescales

A current driving licence and use of a vehicle is an essential requirement of this post. * If you have a disability which precludes you from holding a drivers licence, Scottish Borders Council will take into account its responsibility to make reasonable adjustments to allow for your disability. Should it be possible to make such an adjustment in order that you can undertake the travel responsibilities of the post, this will be taken into account in consideration for this role.
