Role Purpose

Post title: Teacher of Visual Impairment

This is a unique and rewarding opportunity to work as a Teacher of Visual Impairment (VI) across schools throughout the Scottish Borders with a base at Philiphaugh Community School, Selkirk.

This peripatetic role involves travel as required across the authority to support children and young people in a range of educational settings.

The successful candidate will play a key role within Scottish Borders Council's Targeted Pupil Support Service, working collaboratively with schools, families and partner agencies to ensure that children and young people with a visual impairment can access learning, participate fully in school life and achieve their potential.

As part of a dedicated Peripatetic Team, the successful applicant will provide specialist support to children and young people with visual impairments including assessing the impact of visual impairment on learning and participation, planning and delivering individualised interventions, advising on strategies, resources and environmental adaptations, and supporting transitions throughout a learner's educational journey.

The post holder will also:

• Support schools to develop inclusive practice for learners with visual impairments.

• Provide advice, guidance and professional learning to school staff and other partners. • Work closely with families and multi-agency colleagues to ensure coordinated support.

• Contribute to the implementation of local and national policies relating to inclusion and additional support for learning.

• Promote the development of independence, confidence and self-advocacy skills in children and young people with visual impairments.

 

Essential

A degree (B.Ed/PGCE/PGDE) in Primary or Secondary Teaching

• Evidence of Continued Personal Professional Development.

• Full registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (or an assurance that full registration will be forthcoming)

 

A current driving licence and use of a vehicle is an essential requirement of this post. * If you have a disability which precludes you from holding a drivers licence, Scottish Borders Council will take into account its responsibility to make reasonable adjustments to allow for your disability.
