Job Description
A Master has overall command of the Vessel once they hasve completed the Change of Command procedure with the off going Master. They are then authorised to perform whatever acts are necessary for the safe, efficient and proper operation of the vessel.
The Master’s primary considerations must be the safety of life, the safety of the vessel and the prevention of pollution and these considerations must override all other obligations including schedule, expense or convenience. In matters of safety, the Master has authority to take whatever actions they consider to be in the best interests of the vessel. The Master should not hesitate to request Management assistance or support should they consider it necessary, the first point of contact being the Duty Officer.
In addition to the Master’s statutory duties, particular responsibilities include:
- Ensuring that they is fully familiar with the requirements of the Fleet Regulations and other documents which comprise the Ferry Services Safety Management System;
- Ensuring that Fleet Regulations and other relevant documents which comprise the Ferry Services Safety Management System are brought to the attention of all appropriate crew members, and that such documents are understood by them;
- Ensuring that workers on the vessel are made aware of the contents of applicable risk assessments;
- Ensuring that onboard procedures are established to implement the requirements of the Fleet Regulations, other Safety Management System documents and all relevant Council policies, particularly HR policies;
- In liaison with the Route / Senior Master, ensuring the vessel is correctly crewed and, in an emergency, arranging suitable cover.

- Salary shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £2,742 per annum (pro rata), contracted overtime payment and weekend working unsocial
- This post is on a shift pattern of 2 weeks on and 2 weeks off
- Permanent Full Time post for 42.0 Hours per Week (37 hours and 5 hours contracted overtime), 52.18 weeks per year
- A relocation package does not apply to this post
- We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
- You must have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice and where public transport is limited
