Shetland Islands Council is delighted to be recruiting for our new Graduate Development Programme to give talented and enthusiastic people the opportunity to develop their careers within our organisation.

Our Graduate Development Programme is a 2 year supported skills development and career management opportunity, that will place you at the heart of the Council, giving you opportunities to jumpstart your career in local government.

Structure of the programme:

  • During the 2 years programme, you will work as a Graduate Project Officer. You will work on several different projects, across Council service areas, gaining a wide range of experience and skills.
  • Placement on certain projects will be guided by your work preferences, interests, or skills/knowledge.
  • Following successful completion of the 2 years programme, you will be supported to transfer into a suitable vacancy to continue a rewarding career with the Council.
  • You will have a mentor from the leadership team.
  • You will undertake on-the-job training and qualifications.
  • Your employment status will be permanent.

As Graduate Project Officer, you will enjoy the opportunity to:

Furthermore, the Graduate Development Programme presents an exciting opportunity for you to combine a rewarding job with a training programme relevant to your project area/s, including on-the-job training and the chance to work towards a Professional Development Award in Project Management qualification (SCQF8). You will also enjoy the benefit of an allocated mentor from the leadership team, who will assist you in developing skills for your personal and professional growth.

Following successful completion of the two year Graduate Development Programme the Council will remain committed to your professional development throughout your career with the Council.

Eligibility:

  • An Honours or Post Graduate Degree (in any discipline) achieved within the last 3 years (for those completing their degree this year, successful candidate status would be subject to you gaining the qualification).
  • You must have the right to work in the UK. Unfortunately, this post/programme does not meet eligibility criteria for visa sponsorship.

The graduate programme is designed to give you a broad and diverse experience of how the Shetland Islands Council works, where you can contribute to the delivery of our vision and values.
