The purpose of this post is to work effectively with the class teacher(s) to support play-based, child-centred pedagogy within primary.

The main duties of the Play Support Worker are:

  • Working with the class teacher(s), and through sensitive interactions, support children to develop their literacy and numeracy skills in a developmentally appropriate way.
  • To develop positive, nurturing and supportive relationships with children.
  • Taking the lead of the class teacher(s) to develop nurturing and supportive relationships with the children and where appropriate, with parents and carers.
  • To comply with relevant legislation, guidelines and procedures relating to learning, care and health and safety including Child Protection procedures and Health and Safety guidelines.
  • To contribute to the provision of a range of developmentally appropriate, high quality experiences and spaces, outdoors and indoors, which reflects the children’s ideas, aspirations, curiosities and next steps in their learning.
  • To contribute to the development of resources which are open-ended and support a play-based pedagogical approach.

Sound Primary School is a non-denominational school located in the Sound area of Lerwick and provides education from nursery to Primary 7. The school structure currently consists of 1 nursery session per day and 11 primary classes.  There are 22 Teachers including Class teachers, Nursery teacher, Support for Learning Teachers and Specialist Teachers. Our staffing also includes Nursery staff, clerical staff, support staff, supervisors, auxiliaries, crossing patrol assistants and a janitor.   The school is managed by a Head Teacher and 2 Depute Head Teachers.  The Head Teacher is Mrs Ann-Marie Angus.  Further information can be found on the schools website at http://www.sound.shetland.sch.uk/school/ or on our school blog at https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/sh/website/

  • The grade of this post is F
  • Rate of pay shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1.4808 per hour
  • Temporary Part Time post for 20.0 Hours per Week , 39 weeks per year plus 6.24 weeks (pro rata) paid holiday to be taken during school holidays.
  • Temporary contract until June 2025.
  • Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made
