Part–time Teacher of Additional Support Needs (Vision Services) - Montfield Office Block (Fixed Term Temporary opportunity from 06/01/25)

Education Outreach Services seeks an enthusiastic and motivated Teacher of Additional Support Needs to join our specialist team at Montfield Office Block, Lerwick

An exciting opportunity has arisen to work with children/young people (age 0-19) and their families, supporting schools to enhance the experience of children and young people with visual impairment. The Service provides support to children and young people who have additional support needs of which a visual impairment is a contributing factor, in the pre-school, primary and secondary sectors.

This role is peripatetic outreach, visiting children/young people in education settings, homes, and any other relevant environments.

Some of the work undertaken by Vision Service includes,

  1. Specialised assessment of children and young people with visual impairment, including assessment of vision, pre-school development and communication skills.
  2. Provide consultancy and training where appropriate for schools and partners in supporting pupils with visual impairment.
  3. Supporting schools in curriculum planning, preparation of materials, adapting the learning environment and use of technology to allow access to Curriculum for Excellence and wider achievement. Working alongside staff from Mobility and Habilitation Specialists, support the implementation of programmes according to specific pupil needs and capabilities.
  4. Working alongside parents and partner agencies(NHS, Social Work, Education, 3rd Sector, Adult Services) providing advice, information and training and attending multi-agency planning meetings.

Teachers within the Vision Service team may be asked to support other aspects of the wider Educational Outreach team as required.

Candidates should detail in their application whether they currently hold registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). If not, candidates should detail in their application whether they have sought confirmation that they will be able to be registered with the GTCS.

As well as the relevant qualifications and experience, qualities we are looking for in the successful candidate are: vision, energy, initiative, good communication skills and self-discipline.

  • The grade of this post is TCHR
  • Rate of pay shown in the advert is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance of £1.6669 per hour
  • Temporary Part Time post for 13.0 Hours per Week
  • Temporary contract for a period of approximately 12 months.
  • Preferred candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update prior to a formal offer of employment being made
  • You must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) prior to starting in post
  • We would welcome applications from flexible route probationers
  • A relocation package does not apply to this post
  • We will pay interview expenses from within Shetland
