Dollar Academy is seeking to recruit a personable, passionate and committed teacher of Mathematics on a permanent, full-time basis from August 2026 or January 2027.
The post would suit both a newly qualified or more experienced teacher.
We are looking for a reliable, hard-working and enthusiastic teacher who can inspire and motivate pupils at all stages and levels in their mathematical journey. The appointed candidate will be expected to teach the full range of courses offered from Form I to Form V. There is no requirement to have taught the Form VI Advanced Higher courses but the ability and willingness to teach at this level is. An honours degree in Mathematics or a closely related subject is, therefore required.
In the Dollar Mathematics Department everyone counts. We aim to maximise every pupil’s potential in mathematics by creating a positive, inclusive environment where pupils are appropriately challenged and supported. Encouragement lies at the heart of all we do. We aim to help all pupils see that with positivity, practice, patience and perseverance they will make progress and achieve success; and that success harvests motivation, increases confidence and higher aspirations. We set high expectations and high standards, knowing that our young people, encouraged by their teachers will rise to the challenge.
As a Team we are reliable, collaborative, caring and supportive. We enjoy talking about learning and teaching in Mathematics, sharing best practice and resources. There is a wealth of experience, mathematical interest and talent within the Department, with a considerable number of the Team being examination markers for National 5 and Higher Mathematics, and Advanced Higher Statistics.
We are grounded, yet open-minded and innovative in our approach to teaching and learning. In 2023 we organised and hosted a one-day workshop with Craig Barton and during a recent inset day we completed one of his online courses on Atomisation.
In Form I to Form IV pupils are assigned to a class to ensure that they are appropriately supported and challenged. Our Form V and Form VI classes are mixed ability. We currently prepare pupils for National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher examinations. We offer all three Advanced Courses, with the Advanced Higher Mathematics course being particularly popular. In August 2026, in partnership with the Business Education Department, we will be delivering the Higher Applications of Mathematics course for the first time.
At all stages of their learning, pupils are encouraged to see the application, power and elegance of Mathematics. Many of our most able pupils choose to enter both the UK Mathematical Challenge and the Scottish Mathematical Challenge.
We are a very successful Department. In a typical year the great majority of pupils achieve grade A or B at National 5, with roughly 75% gaining a grade A. Approximately 150 pupils sit Higher each year, with over 90% achieving grades A to C and, in 2025, 71% a grade A. Currently, we have over 90 pupils taking one of the Advanced Higher courses. Many pupils go on to read Mathematics, Science, Engineering or Economics at a broad range of universities.
The Academy has a rich co-curricular programme in which all members of staff are expected to participate.
