Are you looking for a new challenge? Would you relish the opportunity to be part of a small team, in a unique environment, dedicated to helping young people re-engage in education and achieve beyond their expectations? Can you offer endless patience, empathy and enthusiasm?

Then this might be the role for you.

Dunedin is a small, independent secondary school providing an exceptional learning environment which offers young people a ‘second chance’ at education.

Our pupils have usually had a difficult journey before they come to us, and most have not been able to thrive in a mainstream setting.

With a sensitive, nurturing and supportive approach, we aim to remove barriers in order to help our young people regain a sense of enjoyment in learning, reignite aspiration in them, and rediscover a sense of self-belief.

As our Computing Science/ Business and Admin Teacher, you will join our hard-working and committed team to help our young people develop essential computing skills and foster their interests in IT, as well as gain qualifications where appropriate.

Whether you are at the start of your career, or you are already highly experienced; whether you are looking for part-time hours, or looking to augment hours, Dunedin can offer the right candidate a learning and teaching environment where you will have autonomy in your department, alongside opportunities to develop leadership skills as part of the collaborative management of the school as a whole.

All teachers must be registered with The General Teaching Council for Scotland.

This post is considered Regulated Work under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act, 2007, and successful candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme, or undergo a PVG Scheme Update check, prior to confirmation of employment.

DUNEDIN SCHOOL

Delivers unique education to individuals

About the School

If you come to work at Dunedin, you will be joining a school that has been dedicated to supporting young people for over 40 years.

Situated at Cameron Toll, the school is housed in a stone cottage which was once the home of trailblazing social reformer and suffragist, Mary Burton – herself home schooled and an activist for equal access to education for women. The writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle also lodged for a time at the cottage.

Now, the cottage provides a homely learning environment for up to 21 young people for whom mainstream education has not been appropriate, or who need time out from mainstream education as a result of medical concerns, additional support needs or other barriers to learning.

Our prime concern is to care for each young person by providing structured, yet flexible, learning opportunities in a safe, supportive and nurturing environment which allows them to re-engage in education and fulfil their potential.

Our school environment is warm and relatively informal; we aim to remove barriers in order to

help our young people regain a love of learning. We focus on the whole child, not just their academic potential.

Our subject teachers deliver a broad Scottish curriculum. They work alongside a full-time administrator, a transitions co-ordinator and two learning, teaching and administrative support staff.

Flexibility is key at Dunedin, and staff turn their hands to a multitude of tasks. They are all involved in organising extra-curricular activities to enrich our pupils’ experience, e.g. sport, trips, art and music. Many members of staff take on the role of guidance tutor which leads to close working relationships with pupils and their families, as well as the outside agencies who support them.

We are proud of our flat management structure. Teaching staff are not only responsible for their own department, but work collaboratively to manage the school, as part of a highly supportive team.

The experience and ideas of all staff are valued, and all staff have an opportunity to make a real difference to the pupils, and the future direction of the school.
