Lecturer in Fashion & Textiles

The Department of Visual and Performing Arts, Edinburgh College, is seeking to recruit a resourceful, enthusiastic, and committed individual to join our Art & Design team as a Lecturer in Fashion & Textiles.

This role will focus on the delivery of our highly popular evening programme, Introduction to Fashion & Textiles, providing learners with an engaging and supportive learning experience that develops both creative and technical skills.

Role Overview

As a Lecturer in Fashion & Textiles, you will be responsible for the specialist delivery of learning and teaching activities on our evening class programme. The successful candidate will bring a strong vocational background in Fashion and Textiles, with the knowledge, skills, and experience required to inspire and support learners in developing their creative practice.

You will plan and deliver high-quality teaching sessions, prepare learning materials and resources, demonstrate specialist techniques, and maintain a safe and inclusive learning environment. You will also contribute to wider departmental activities, including exhibitions, showcases, and collaborative projects.

Essential Criteria

Applicants must be educated to a minimum of HND level (or equivalent) in a relevant Fashion, Textiles, or related Art & Design discipline.

The successful applicant will be occupationally competent and able to demonstrate:

• Strong industry knowledge and understanding of the Fashion and Textiles sector.
• Experience working with Fashion and Textiles processes, materials, and techniques.
• Competence in the use, demonstration, and supervision of specialist equipment, including:
• Industrial and domestic sewing machines
• Overlockers
• Fabric dyeing facilities
• Screen-printing equipment
• Pattern cutting and garment construction skills.
• A strong understanding of surface pattern design using both traditional and digital techniques.
• Experience preparing and maintaining specialist Fashion and Textiles materials, equipment, and learning resources.
• The ability to support exhibition installations and the safe use of specialist workshop equipment.
• Effective lesson planning, resource preparation, and classroom management skills.

Desirable Criteria

The following would be advantageous:

• A teaching qualification.
• Experience delivering courses, workshops, or training programmes within further education, community learning, or industry settings.

Skills and Attributes

You will be an excellent communicator with the ability to build positive relationships with learners, colleagues, and stakeholders across the College. You should be comfortable supporting learners of varying abilities and backgrounds and be able to work effectively as part of a team alongside lecturers and learning assistants.
