Music Teacher
Required for August 2026. Edinburgh Steiner School is seeking an inspirational and qualified Music teacher to join our thriving School community. This is a full-time post which involves the delivery of 27 x 40 minute lessons per week, teaching pupils from age 7 up to, and including, the Higher Music course. MUSIC TEACHER JOB DESCRIPTION
1. Teach music to a range of ages (classes 3 - 12, 8 - 18 years old).
Lower School 8 – 14 years old
2. Teach and engage pupils with a wide range of songs which follow the seasons, festivals and general Steiner curriculum. These should increase in complexity as the age groups progress: part songs, rounds and choral music.
3. Teach the pipe or recorder to classes up to class 7.
4. Introduce age-appropriate aspects of music theory.
5. Encourage pupils to take up musical instruments, particularly orchestral ones. This requires liaising with the pupils’ class teachers and parents.
6. Run choirs for mixed ability groups.
7. Organise a weekly lower school orchestra for classes 5 and 6.
8. Prepare items for performance at assemblies and concerts.
9. Organise an annual weekend pupils’ concert.
10. Support class and subject teachers with musical contributions for class plays or presentations.
11. Arrange an annual Christmas Concert at a local church.
12. When possible, put on a musical, for performance with volunteer pupils from several classes.
Upper School
13. Be prepared to take a choir involving the whole upper school.
14. Take the senior orchestra (classes 7 -12).
15. Teach SQA Higher Music to a small group of pupils for university entrance purposes. This requires a good knowledge of music history, musical styles, theory, harmony and composition.
16. There are opportunities to teach main lessons in the lower and upper school.
Private Pupil Instrumental Lessons
Coordinate a small group of free-lance instrumental teachers for private lessons to take place on school premises.
