Assistant Tutor - HMP Kilmarnock

About the Role

We are looking to recruit an Assistant Tutor who will work closely with the Learning Centre staff to ensure that learners within a prison learning environment receive high quality support and that individual needs and requirements are met.

Key Responsibilities

Responsible for the various education Induction sessions which cover administer and marking screening tools, promotion of learning opportunities and taster sessions.

Carry out supportive interviews with potential learners and complete Personal Development Plans (PDP) in order to agree goals, learning targets and outcomes. Record information onto PR2.

Complete Personal Development Support Plan (PDSP), where appropriate and input all information into PR2 and Fife College REMS.

Conduct reviews of PDP’s and PDSP’s in accordance with the contract

In conjunction with the Area Manager and Learning Centre Staff support projects e.g. family learning initiatives in collaboration with SPS

Proactively encourage and motivate learners and act as a mentor/facilitator for less confident leaners

Qualifications and Experience

Essential:

Minimum SVQ Level 3 / HNC or equivalent (SCQF Level 7) in a relevant field

Qualification in SALL (Supporting Adult Literacy Learners) SCQF Level 6 or other community based learning qualification, or willing to work towards

Knowledge of Microsoft databases, spreadsheets and word

Understanding and experience of working with literacy learners

Experience of working with learners with learning difficulties and disabilities

Desirable:

Qualification in Learner Support or ESOL

Facilitating project based learning in a group setting

Understanding the prison context

Skills and Attributes

Essential:

Ability to motivate and engage learners

Good communication skills in liaising with students and prison staff

Good positive personal attributes and professionalism

Flexibility and responsibility

Desirable:

Appropriate knowledge of existing, emerging and assistive technologies to support and enhance the learner journey

Training

As this position is based within a prison setting, the successful candidate(s) will be required to complete mandatory in-house SPS Training, which includes classroom work as well as scenario based physical movements for self-defence purposes.
