Glasgow Caledonian – the largest and leading modern university in Scotland - is a vibrant, values-led university with campuses in the heart of Glasgow and London. With a strong commitment to high quality education and research which supports the communities we serve, we have strong partnerships with employers to ensure our students get the careers they dream of and deserve.

Named UK Modern University of the Year for Graduate Jobs in the latest Daily Mail University Guide, and the top-ranked UK modern university in the Times and Sunday Times Guide 2026, we are a UK top 40 university according to these highly regarded guides. We are the only Scottish university with EcoCampus Platinum accreditation and were ranked first in Scotland for sustainability in the most recent People and Planet league table (2024).

With a wide range of professionally accredited courses and links with over 300 industry partners, we are the top university in Scotland for students in employment and/or further study within 15 months of graduating at 92% - with 78% of graduates in highly skilled occupations (HESA 2025). We are Scotland’s leading provider of Graduate Apprenticeships. We are committed to widening participation, helping more people from diverse backgrounds into university. Our modern campuses support nearly 23,000 students from 119 countries.

Our research is addressing many of today’s biggest global challenges. We are unsurpassed by any other Scottish modern university for the level of research (72%) considered to be world leading or internationally excellent, and our health research is surpassed only by King’s College London for outstanding impact (REF2021).

Guided by our values – integrity, responsibility, creativity and confidence - we transform the lives of the people and communities we serve.

The Directorate of Estates and Facilities Management (E&FM) are responsible for the management and day-to-day running of the University estate and ensures essential services are in place for all who work, study and visit Glasgow Caledonian. E&FM are also responsible for the strategic planning and transformation of the University estate to a modern, responsive and sustainable built environment that enhances student, staff and visitor experience and host community experience- enabling the University to perform its core purpose of delivering high-quality Learning & Teaching.

We invite applications for an experienced Mechanical Supervisor to join the E&FM Directorate on a 1.0 FTE (35 hours per week) full-time basis due to the retirement of the existing post holder and the continuing maintenance management needs at the Glasgow campus. This role will support the Directorate in the development of an Asset Management approach for the maintenance management of the University’s estate which include buildings, architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing and drainage assets. This role would be ideal for an experienced Mechanical Supervisor or an experienced Commercial Mechanical Engineer ready to make their first step into management.

The role involves leading the day-to-day reactive and planned maintenance of the campus mechanical assets. The amount of mechanical assets on site is significant and include air conditioning, plumbing, drainage, boilers, pumps, pressurisation units etc. The postholder is crucial to GCU business continuity and to ensure GCU's estate and its assets are statutorily compliant and comply with Health & Safety standards.

The postholder will have excellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skills with relevant Hard FM and Maintenance Management experience. The postholder will supervise and control suppliers/contractors working on site with a small team of on-site contractor staff operating 5 days per week (and occasional weekends) as well as supervising essential disruptive maintenance.

Experience of working in a similar role in a Higher Education environment would be advantageous.

For further details on this post or for an informal, confidential conversation please contact Malcolm McFetridge, Senior Facilities Manager at Glasgow Caledonian University at malcolm.mcfetridge@gcu.ac.uk
