In 2023 we rocketed into the top 40 universities in the UK in the highly regarded Guardian University Guide, were ranked the UK’s 2nd top performing modern university in the inaugural Daily Mail guide and entered the top highly coveted 50 UK universities in the 2024 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide for the first time. We are Scotland’s leading provider of Graduate Apprenticeships. We are committed to widening participation, helping more people from diverse backgrounds into university. With campuses in Glasgow, London and New York, we have transnational partnerships around the world, supporting more than 22,000 students from nearly 120 countries.

To support our continuing growth, we are seeking to appoint a Lecturer within the Department of Vision Sciences. The Department is one of 6 located within the School of Health & Life Sciences. The School is committed to the pursuit of excellence in teaching, applied research and knowledge transfer. The Department of Vision Sciences offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes, including Master of Optometry with Independent Prescribing (MOptom IP), BSc(Hons) Orthoptics and BSc Ophthalmic Dispensing Management. Being the only University in the UK where these programmes co-exist allows a unique shared teaching approach and inter-professional training of eye care professions. Our teaching is underpinned by research, is evidence based and incorporates a wide range of on-campus and external practical and clinical experiences.
Providing an outstanding student experience where everyone can flourish is central to the Departmental philosophy. The Department has been innovative in integrating therapeutic management into the syllabus of the MOptom, enhancing role of eye care professionals, in anticipation of the future needs of the Scottish population. Our programmes were ranked first in the UK in the Complete University Guide (Optometry, Ophthalmology & Orthoptics Tables 2019). At post-graduate level, the Department offers MSc in Investigative Ophthalmology & Vision Research as well as a range of Continuing Professional Development courses. Apart from its teaching successes, the Department has an active and diverse portfolio of research activities and an active research community.
As a Lecturer in Vision Sciences you will have a focus on providing high-quality learning and teaching underpinned by scholarly activity. We are keen to receive applications from people who will enhance the delivery of our programmes and our reputation in the field of Vision Sciences although expertise in related areas is welcomed. Applicants should hold a BSc (Hons) Optometry/Orthoptics or equivalent, be registered with either the GOC as Optometrist or the HCPC as an Orthoptist.
Lecturers are expected to contribute to the delivery and assessment of existing modules, student supervision, and the enhancement of the student experience across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Department. Prior experience of supporting student learning in the disciplines of Vision Sciences or relevant industry work experience is essential.
The Department of Vision Sciences promotes innovation in learning and teaching and we are keen to appoint an individual with experience of e-learning and online environments along with excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
