The Research Centre for Health (ReaCH) in the School of Health & Life Sciences has an international reputation for delivering high impact research. In the recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (2021) 91% of GCU’s health related research has been formally classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. Moreover, the impact of GCU’s applied health research was classified as ‘outstanding’ and surpassed by only one other UK institution. The University's outstanding record for delivering impact for the common good against the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals was also highlighted in the recent Global Impact Rankings with GCU 1st in Scotland for SDG3, good health and wellbeing.

This research post will sit between the department of Social Work (SHLS) and School of Computing, Engineering & Built Environment (SCEBE). The Department of Social work is ranked first in the UK. Our research focuses on critical social work and includes partnerships across the world. Muir is Tir sits in the social work department as the central focus of the project is engaged science, therefore community relations will be central to the project’s success.

As such the successful candidate will work with colleagues in the Department of Social Work in the School of Health and Life Sciences and Civil Engineering and Environmental Management in the School of Computing Engineering and Built Environment (SCEBE) in GCU.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is in interested in inter and multi-disciplinary approaches to climate adaptation. Muir is Tir takes an innovative approach to adaptation and brings together science, engineering, social science and arts in order to develop nature-based solutions with island communities. The project is located in Scotland’s Outer Hebrides in the islands of Barra and Vatersay. It is therefore desirable that you have some understanding of Gaelic Culture and fishing/crofting communities.

You will enjoy working on site in coastal areas. You will be a creative problem solver who is keen to think outside the box. You will be enthusiastic to learn new skills and be both able to work autonomously and as part of a team. You will be educated to degree level, ideally in the field of environmental science or engineering. As an interdisciplinary project Muir Is Tir will offer you a range of learning opportunities and enable you to contribute to the development of adaptation science that will support future generations. A PVG check will be required for this role.
