Glasgow Caledonian – the largest and leading modern university in Scotland - is a vibrant, values-led university with campuses in the heart of Glasgow and London. With a strong commitment to high quality education and research which supports the communities we serve, we have strong partnerships with external organisations to support our researchers to grow and develop.

In 2023 we rocketed into the top 40 universities in the UK in the highly regarded Guardian University Guide, were ranked the UK’s 2nd top performing modern university in the inaugural Daily Mail guide, and entered the top highly coveted 50 UK universities in the 2024 Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide for the first time. We are the top performing modern University in Scotland in all three guides. We are the only Scottish university with EcoCampus Platinum accreditation and were ranked second in Scotland for sustainability in the most recent People and Planet league table. We are committed to widening participation, helping more people from diverse backgrounds into university.

Guided by our values – integrity, responsibility, creativity and confidence - we transform the lives of the people and communities we serve. To support our continuing growth, we are seeking to appoint a research assistant for the UPLIFT project within the Department of Nursing and Community Health. The Department of Nursing and Community Health offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and CPD programmes and modules in Nursing and Public Health. Our research has both a strong applied health focus, as well as educational evaluation, and our commitment to student focused, innovative and flexible learning strategies is supported by our state-of-the art facilities.

The Departmental research is housed within the Research Centre for Health (ReaCH) in the School of Health & Life Sciences which has an international reputation for delivering high impact research. In the recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (2021) 91% of GCU’s health related research was formally classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. More over, the impact of GCU’s applied health research was classified as ‘outstanding’ and surpassed by only one other UK institution. The University's outstanding record for delivering impact for the common good against the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals was also highlighted in the recent THE Global Impact Rankings with GCU 1st in Scotland for SDG3, good health and wellbeing.

This position is to work within a research team on the UPLIFT study under the management of the Chief Investigator.  The post is based in Glasgow and members of the team are located across Scotland and England. The UPLIFT study is funded by the Burdett Trust for Nursing.  One of the study aims is to understand the perspectives of General Practice Nurses (GPNs) about intervention implementation in routine, GPN-led, primary care appointments. A key part of the role will be to create relationships with GPN partners, undertake interviews with GPNs, analyse and report those data. A core element of the UPLIFT study is to use arts-based research methods to understand the needs and perspectives of women from diverse age, cultural, socioeconomic and geographical backgrounds to inform advice and resources for a pelvic health intervention.

The appointed research assistant will support the senior researchers in organising and undertaking these workshops, alongside our patient and public involvement colleagues who will also be supporting data collection in these workshops. This may involve some travel across the UK. There will be a final workshop, bringing interested people together, and part of your responsibility in this post will be organising this event with the support of senior researchers. Finally, you will work with the Chief Investigator and Project Manager to ensure the smooth running of the project across all aspects of activity.

We are looking to appoint a candidate who enjoys working in a multidisciplinary team with a focus on women’s pelvic health.  You should be qualified to at least Masters level and should have some experience, knowledge and understanding of qualitative research methods, including gathering and analysing qualitative data.  As you will work with people from different backgrounds and from across the UK, strong written and oral communication skills are essential, along with the ability to adapt those skills in your day to day work. Some knowledge of qualitative analysis software would be beneficial (such as NVivo) along with the ability to use Microsoft Office software. UPLIFT is within a study about women’s health and previous experience of health research is essential.  Finally, you will require to have knowledge about relevant governance policies for research, such as ethical considerations, research governance and data protection.

Experience of research co-production and working with under-served populations would be advantageous. Additionally, experience in women’s health specifically would be beneficial. A willingness to be flexible and work on a variety of tasks individually and as part of the team is encouraged.
