The Department of Psychology is a dynamic and vibrant academic community with a strong track record of applied psychology provision that includes innovative teaching and learning, scholarly activity, research, practice and knowledge transfer activities. To support our continuing growth, we are seeking to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Health Psychology or Sport & Exercise Psychology who will contribute to the academic vibrancy of the Department. The successful candidate will have access to the Department’s recently refurbished virtual reality lab.
Candidates should have a strong reputation in their domain of applied psychology, experience in leadership within a higher education context (e.g., programme leadership), and/or a strong research profile in applied psychology, evidenced by a track record of high-quality research outputs and income generation. Applications will also be assessed on candidates’ skills, knowledge and experience across the breadth of the undergraduate curriculum.
Applicants should hold a doctoral qualification in psychology, be a HCPC Registered Health Psychologist or Sport & Exercise Psychologist, and be eligible for Chartership with the British Psychological Society. We recognise that applicants moving into higher education from other context (e.g., practice) may have limited direct experience of the requirements for the post. In such instances they must outline their experience, skills and achievements in such a way as to demonstrate they meet, or have the potential to meet, the essential criteria.
Senior Lecturers are expected to inspire learning and contribute to existing modules, supervision, and the enhancement of the student experience across the range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. These include the BPS accredited BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology, MSc Forensic Psychology and three BPS accredited/HCPC approved Doctorates in Counselling Psychology, Health Psychology, and Sport & Exercise Psychology.
Prior experience of supporting psychology student learning, teaching and assessment in higher education, and/or in practice settings is essential. The Department of Psychology promotes innovation in learning and teaching and, therefore, we are keen to appoint an individual with experience of e-learning and online environments. A higher education teaching qualification and/or Fellow status with AdvanceHE is desirable. The post holders will also be expected to contribute to ensuring curricula are current and compliant with internal and external regulatory frameworks.
The successful candidates will also engage in high quality, internationally recognised research, scholarly, and/or enterprise activities. These will link with the School’s Research Centre for Health as well as complementing the work of our existing Psychology team. In this way, the successful candidates will help to develop the profile of the Department both nationally and internationally.
The Research Centre for Health (ReaCH) in the School of Health & Life Sciences has an international reputation for delivering high impact research. In the recent Research Excellence Framework assessment (2021) 91% of GCU’s health related research has been formally classified as world-leading or internationally excellent. Moreover, the impact of GCU’s applied health research was classified as ‘outstanding’ and surpassed by only one other UK institution. The University's outstanding record for delivering impact for the common good against the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals was also highlighted in the recent THE Global Impact Rankings with GCU 1st in Scotland for SDG3, good health and wellbeing.
