The Role
The High School of Dundee is seeking to appoint, for August 2026, a well-qualified, enthusiastic, and effective Teacher of English to join a friendly, committed and high-performing department. The post is a full-time, permanent post. We would also welcome applications from newly qualified teachers wishing to complete their probationary year with us to achieve full registration with the GTCS. This opportunity would also suit experienced teachers looking for a new challenge and those that are newly qualified. An ability to teach English at all levels (up to, and including, Advanced Higher) is essential.
It is expected that the successful candidate will possess:
· Experience of teaching English at all levels, up to, and including Advanced Higher
· An interest and willingness to help organise and deliver departmental co‐curricular activities, including trips and visits
· A high level of initiative, motivation and drive, including the ability to work to deadlines
· Competence in the use of ICT and its application to learning and teaching
· An ability to communicate well both orally and in written form, to work effectively as part of a team, and to be adaptable
· An ability to interact positively and constructively with others, including colleagues and parents
· An ability to create a motivating learning environment and to deliver the curriculum in a way which takes account of individual pupil needs
All teaching staff at the High School of Dundee are expected to contribute to the school’s co‐curricular programme and to participate in whole school events and the broader life of the school.
The main features of the remit include:
· The teaching of English from Form 1 to Advanced Higher (including thorough planning, assessment and reporting)
· Preparation of pupils for internal and external examinations
· Curricular and resource development as directed by the Head of Department
· Attending visits, theatre trips and writing/ speaking competitions run by the department
· Group tutor (registration and first-line pastoral care) duties
· Meeting with parents and colleagues as required

Person Specification
Candidates should have an English degree (or related) and be registered with the GTCS (General Teaching Council Scotland) or be eligible for registration.
Applicants who are newly qualified and/ or are embarking on their probationary year are welcome to apply.
The successful applicant should have drive, enthusiasm and a dynamic approach to the teaching of English. They should possess a genuine love for their subject, alongside a commitment to placing the care and welfare of pupils at the heart of their practice. A good sense of humour is also essential.
All staff, as a condition of appointment, must contribute to the co-curricular life of the school.
The Department
The English Department currently comprises the Head of Department and four full-time members of staff.
The department is committed to the Core Values of the School and to creating the very best learning experience for the pupils in their care.
Members of the Department are currently involved in a wide range of activities: rugby, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, overseeing the production and editing of school publications, and participation in both local, national and overseas trips.
Accommodation and Resources
The Department is located in the Robert Ferguson Building where large classrooms are complimented by a spacious departmental base. Each classroom is equipped with a laptop and docking station, Smart Board and full audio-visual facilities. There is good storage space and there are display areas in all classrooms.
The School requires all newly appointed staff to undertake a check with the Scottish Criminal Records Office in line with the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (‘PVG’) Scheme. Offers of employment are conditional upon satisfactory registration with the PVG Scheme.
