The High School of Glasgow is seeking to appoint an outstanding and enthusiastic School Librarian to lead and develop library services acrossboth the Senior and Junior Schools.
This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and creative individual to play a central role in fostering a culture of reading, curiosity and intellectual engagement within a vibrant school community.
THE ROLE
The School Librarian is responsible for the day-to-day management and strategic development of The High School of Glasgow’s libraries, while also contributing to teaching and learning across the curriculum.
The successful candidate will actively promote literacy, support research skills and help create an inspiring and inclusive learning environment for all pupils.
Working closely with the English Department and pastoral teams, the Librarian will lead reading initiatives, organise events and support pupils in developing a lifelong love of reading.
This role extends beyond traditional library duties. The Librarian will contribute to the wider intellectual and cultural life of the school through events, displays, collaborations and pupil engagement. There is also an opportunity to support the Development and Alumni Relations Team through the management of school archives and preparation of materials for alumni events.

Have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to build strong relationships with pupils and staff
Be confident working both independently and collaboratively
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Library Management
Lead the management and development of library services across both schools
Maintain a welcoming, organised and accessible library environment
Oversee acquisition, cataloguing and promotion of print and digital resources
Manage library systems, lending processes and stock control
Manage the library budget and ensure a diverse, relevant and up-to-date collection
Create engaging displays and themed reading promotions
Literacy and Reading Culture
Promote a strong culture of reading for pleasure across the school
Support whole-school literacy initiatives in collaboration with the English Department
Plan and deliver key events such as World Book Day and Book Week/Festival
Organise author visits, reading challenges and themed activities
Support pupils in developing research, study and independent learning skills
Curriculum Support
Work with teaching staff to support learning through library resources
Deliver or assist with lessons focused on research and information literacy
Provide guidance to pupils undertaking coursework and extended research
Pupil Engagement and Supervision
Supervise pupils in the library throughout the school day
Support after-school study and homework sessions
Train and oversee pupil librarians where appropriate
Maintain a calm, purposeful and inclusive study environment
Inclusion and School Values
Support initiatives linked to inclusion and wellbeing, including Rights Respecting Schools work
Contribute to events celebrating diversity and equality
Engage with pupil groups and committees where appropriate
Archives and Alumni Engagement
Assist with the organisation and management of school archives
Support preparation of historical materials for alumni events and reunions
Contribute to preserving the school’s heritage
Professional Practice
Keep up to date with developments in librarianship and literacy education
Contribute to relevant policies and school initiatives
Undertake additional duties as required by the Head of Senior School or Rector
