Job Summary

The School of Pharmacy, Applied Sciences, and Public Health is seeking to recruit a dynamic, enthusiastic and self-motivated individual to the post of Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Science. The School is multi-disciplinary in composition with access to a Human Performance Laboratory housing a state-of-the-art 3-D Motion Capture facility and is situated next to the £11m RGU:SPORT complex at the Garthdee Campus on the banks of the picturesque River Dee.

You will be expected to contribute to the developing portfolio of learning pathways within the school at undergraduate level, including the BSc (hons) Applied Sport and Exercise Science and BSc (Hons) Sport Coaching. You will possess a flexible and innovative approach to teaching and learning and will play a role in the leadership and delivery of modules. Practical and theoretical knowledge in the subject area is essential, as is relevant experience. A first degree in Sport and Exercise Science or related subject area is essential, as is a relevant higher degree. Experience of undertaking learning, teaching and assessment using innovative approaches is very desirable.

Grade 7 Salary Scale: £39,906 - 46,049
Grade 8 Salary Scale: £47,389 – 56,535
Salary on appointment will be dependent upon experience.

Candidates with limited or no prior experience as an academic will be placed on the first point of the Grade 7 scale. Consideration will be given to offering an Academic Attraction Payment (adjusted annually) for those candidates who have specific industry knowledge, skills or, expertise which are required for the position.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Dean of School

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No line management responsibility

PURPOSE OF POST: Contributes to the delivery, assessment, and development of the School's portfolio of learning experiences and actively contributes to the School’s research/scholarly activities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES: The duties and responsibilities of a Lecturer including contribution to the design, development and delivery of teaching and assessment at undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as research/service development & evaluation.

Duties include an appropriate balance of the following:

• Develop and maintain expertise in subject areas

• Participate in subject and course development

• Participate in course curriculum development

• Establish and maintain relevant professional and industrial links, as necessary, for the effective operation of the School's courses (e.g., engagement in work of external bodies, educational and professional)

Teaching and related activities (both face-to-face and online) including:

• Participation in the design, delivery and assessment of face-to-face and online activities

• Participation in authoring and review of learning materials

• Contribution to the online support of students using the RGU virtual learning environment

• Examining and assessment

• Developing courses and curricula

Scholarly activity and personal development including:

• Educational management and administration

• Participation in relevant internal and external committees

• Working groups and project teams

• Mentoring, counselling and other forms of student support

• Participation in quality assurance procedures

• Participation in staff appraisal scheme

• Representing the university or profession on external bodies Research activity including:

• Developing research skills

• Contributing to the School research portfolio in an area of sports and exercise science/sports coaching

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science (or similar); Postgraduate qualification in a cognate area.

Knowledge

Specialist academic knowledge in Sports and Exercise Science.

Experience

Demonstrable evidence of engagement with CPD in the Sport/Exercise area

Experience of working in a sport and/or exercise science environment.

 

DESIRABLE REQUIRMENTS

PGCE or equivalent PhD

Membership of an appropriate professional organisation (e.g. BPS; BASES; ECSS; UKSCA; etc).

Experience

Demonstrable evidence of delivering information in innovative ways to encourage learner engagement and information retention.

Delivering a high-quality experience in a Higher Education learning and teaching environment.

Successful use of e-learning tools to encourage learner engagement and information retention.
