Applications are invited for an Aquaculture Scientist – Shellfish Research & Development (fixed term for up to 3 years) to lead and deliver research and knowledge exchange activity in the Marine Science Section at UHI Shetland. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative, applied research supporting the sustainable development and diversification of the shellfish sector.

The role will focus on the development, delivery and management of research activity aligned to shellfish aquaculture, including improving understanding of shellfish production systems, environmental interactions, innovation in cultivation techniques, and supporting sector growth. You will lead on the preparation of funding applications, manage project delivery in line with funder requirements, and ensure high-quality outputs including technical reports and, where appropriate, peer-reviewed publications.

You will be expected to work closely with industry partners, research collaborators and stakeholders locally, nationally and internationally. The post holder will contribute to knowledge exchange activity, present findings at meetings and conferences, and actively support the translation of research into practical outcomes for the shellfish aquaculture sector. The successful candidate will also contribute to the wider Marine Sciences section, working collaboratively across projects and supporting the continued growth of aquaculture research at UHI Shetland.

Applicants should hold a postgraduate qualification in Marine Science, Aquaculture or a related discipline and have a minimum of five years’ relevant professional experience. A strong track record of research delivery, experience in developing or contributing to funded research projects, and excellent analytical and communication skills are essential. A PhD and experience of working directly with industry partners would be advantageous.

Applicants should note that the appointment is initially supported by short-term funding, a key responsibility of the successful applicant will be to develop and submit grant applications, with continuation of the post dependent on securing further external funding.
