We have an exciting opportunity for a Facilities Technician to join UHI Shetland’s Facilities team. The postholder will play a key role in ensuring the safe, efficient and effective operation of UHI Shetland’s buildings, grounds and learning environments across our campuses.

The Facilities Technician will be responsible for delivering a combination of planned and reactive maintenance, minor repairs, grounds maintenance and security duties. The role will also support the setup of campus spaces for teaching and events, and contribute to ensuring that all College facilities are maintained to a high standard, compliant with statutory requirements, and provide a safe and welcoming environment for staff, students and visitors.

The postholder will undertake a range of practical maintenance duties including plumbing, carpentry, painting and minor electrical repairs, as well as monitoring and supporting building systems such as heating, ventilation and plant equipment. The role will also involve assisting with statutory compliance activities including PAT testing, water quality checks and Legionella control procedures, alongside maintaining accurate records of maintenance and inspection activity.

In addition, the successful candidate will undertake security responsibilities including opening and closing of premises, alarm response and keyholding duties, as well as supporting fire safety procedures, drills and inspections. The role may also require out-of-hours callouts in response to emergencies relating to security, fire or maintenance issues.

The Facilities Technician will support the Campus Services and Facilities Manager in ensuring the smooth running of campus operations and may be required to provide cover during periods of absence. The role will also involve liaising with contractors, supporting grounds maintenance activities including winter gritting and snow clearance, and assisting with the organisation of campus spaces for events and College activities.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate practical experience in building maintenance or a similar hands-on role, along with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team. The successful candidate will be flexible, adaptable and willing to respond to the operational needs of the College. A full, clean driving licence is required.

Experience of working in a facilities, maintenance or trade environment would be advantageous, along with any relevant trade qualifications or health and safety training. The postholder should also have good communication skills, basic IT competence and a commitment to maintaining high standards of safety, quality and customer service.
