We have an exciting opportunity for Casual and Temporary Seagrass Field Assistants to join UHI Shetland’s project restoring seagrass in the Shetland Islands, as part of the SMEEF Scottish Seagrass Planting Programme. We are looking for enthusiastic, resourceful and resilient candidates keen to take an early step in a career in marine research or conservation to join our team in Shetland.
Temporary Field Assistant posts will be based in Shetland full-time for 3 months over spring/summer 2026 (flexible but preferably May to August). We are also seeking Casual Field Assistants to work on an ad-hoc basis to support project fieldwork over the next 6 months. A copy of this JDPS is also available.
The successful candidates will join the project team in delivering seagrass habitat monitoring surveys and trial seagrass planting in Shetland. The roles will be predominately field-based with a strong practical element, with time spent snorkelling, collecting survey and monitoring data and collecting, processing, and replanting seagrass shoots. In addition, the candidates may be required to process and analyse video and survey data, organise field kit, and coordinate volunteer activity. The post will require candidates to undertake blocks of field work which may include weekend and evening hours, as set by suitable weather and tide conditions.
The successful candidate will have experience of snorkelling in cold water environments and will ideally hold a recognised dive, snorkel, or free-diving qualification. Candidates will ideally be studying for or hold either a degree in a relevant area, such as marine biology or ecology, or will have relevant practical experience and skills and a desire to be involved in practical restoration activities.
Applicants should note that Interviews will be scheduled Friday 17th April 2026 via Microsoft teams
