The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service would like to invite applications for the post of Fleet Support Technician (Mechanic) based at Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, East Asset Resource Centre, Newbridge. This is a full-time opportunity, working 35 hours per week.
This is a full-time post however applications from individuals seeking to work on a part time, job share, or flexible working basis would be considered.
All roles within the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Fleet and Equipment Department, assist the organisation to meet its mission statement of providing the highest standard of fire safety and emergency response services to all communities served by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, working towards the primary aims of prevention, intervention, people and performance.
This post is predominately workshop based, however will have a significant requirement for the inspection and testing of new and existing vehicles and operational equipment ‘on site’ at the service stations and premises throughout the East Service Delivery Area.
The post holder will be responsible for the detailed inspection, servicing and maintenance regimes on fire service vehicles and operational equipment in accordance with Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) and Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA) guidelines and procedures.
It is essential that candidates are fully qualified, time served vehicle mechanics with the appropriate City and Guilds qualifications or equivalent and have previous experience of managing a team of staff for a minimum of 2 years. They should also be educated to HNC level or have equivalent experience gained within the working environment. Additionally, candidates must hold a current driving licence and have experience of working in an environment providing fleet cover 24/7. They will need to be able to work as part of a team in a busy working environment and have experience of using Fleet Management systems and other IT packages e.g. Word/Excel. Experience of being able to generate positive working relationships to achieve an end result is also required together with the ability to communicate clearly and confidently to various groups of staff, have good organisational skills in order to meet timescales/deadlines and have experience of budgetary control.
It would also be desirable for the candidate to hold a category C driving licence, have a good awareness of Health and Safety Policy and Procedures. Some training on Equality and Diversity and have a flexible approach to working arrangements.
Fleet and Equipment Services currently operate a 4-day working pattern, namely:
Week 1: Monday - Wednesday 08:00 - 17:30, Thursday 08:00 - 16:30.
Week 2: Tuesday - Thursday 08:00 - 17:30, Friday 08:00 - 16:30.
A mandatory 24/7 out of hours on call system is in operation on a one in eight Rota basis, this may at times be required to be altered to meet business needs.
In addition to the agreed salary, a market allowance is applicable to this post for suitably experienced candidates. Taking account of this market allowance, the potential combined maximum remuneration for this post is £37,919. The salary range for this role is SFRS Grade 4 £32,041 - £34,472 per annum, and where applicable a market allowance of £3,447 per annum will also be included.
The market allowance is an additional payment agreed to be paid for an initial two-year period. This allowance is subject to review and may be varied or removed where market pressures change or no longer exist. SFRS Market Allowance Policy outlines the specific criteria relating to the application of market allowance payments and the conditions associated with this. The market allowance will be payable where the appointee is able to demonstrate they are suitably competent, experienced and qualified to undertake the full aspects of the role.

Salary on appointment will normally be at the lower salary point, with progression subject to regular review - in line with the SFRS performance appraisal arrangements. A higher salary placing will be considered in exceptional circumstances subject to experience demonstrated.
