HERITAGE AMBASSADOR – EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is delighted to invite applications for volunteer Heritage Ambassadors (Events & Activities) based at the Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage, 1A Dryden Terrace, Edinburgh.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM

The Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage is operated by SFRS as part of our community Fire Station on McDonald Road in Edinburgh. As our flagship heritage site, the museum shares the stories of Scotland’s firefighters, reflecting the diverse challenges of our communities and celebrating the rich history and traditions of Scotland’s fire service.

ROLE OVERVIEW – EVENTS & ACTIVITIES

Events & Activities Volunteers support the delivery of engaging, family-focused experiences at the Museum of Scottish Fire Heritage. Volunteers assist with activities throughout the year, including during school holidays and festive periods such as Easter, Halloween and Christmas, as well as national and community events including Doors Open Day.

This is a forward-facing, hands-on role supporting children, families and community groups to enjoy meaningful, creative and memorable experiences.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Deliver or support craft sessions, story time and themed workshops.
  • Support drop-in family activities including trails and hands-on tasks.
  • Assist with seasonal events including Halloween, Christmas and Doors Open Day.
  • Welcome children and families, provide orientation and support visitor flow.
  • Help prepare materials and set up and reset activity areas.
  • Maintain a safe, positive and inclusive environment for all visitors.

PERSONAL QUALITIES & ATTRIBUTES

We are looking for volunteers who are:

  • Enthusiastic about working with children and families.
  • Friendly, patient and approachable.
  • Reliable, adaptable and willing to learn new skills.
  • Able to work as part of a team and follow guidance.
  • Creative or practical skills are desirable but not essential.

Our volunteers come from a wide range of backgrounds including retired firefighters, members of the local community, students and heritage enthusiasts. Full training, covered expenses and ongoing support will be provided.

TIME COMMITMENT

Volunteer opportunities are primarily during school holidays, weekends and special event days. Volunteers are encouraged to support multiple events and activities throughout the year where possible.

SUPPORT & TRAINING

All Events & Activities Heritage Ambassadors will receive:

  • Museum induction and safeguarding guidance.
  • Activity delivery training.
  • Ongoing support from the Visitor Experience Team Leader.
  • Reimbursement of approved travel expenses.

DISCLOSURE REQUIREMENTS

This role requires a Disclosure Scotland check due to regular contact with children and young people. Applicants must meet the requirements of a Level 2 Disclosure prior to being offered a volunteer post and are expected to maintain this while volunteering.
