The Royal British Legion Scotland

Honorarium up to £4,000 per annum

The Royal British Legion Scotland (RBLS) is a nationwide membership charity founded on the principles of supporting veterans and their families across Scotland. As we enter an exciting period of strategic change and development, we are seeking an experienced and committed National Trustee Treasurer to join our Board and help guide the charity’s financial future.

This is a senior voluntary trustee role offering the opportunity to make a meaningful, long-term impact at a crucial stage in the organisation’s journey.

About the role

As National Treasurer, you will play a vital role in ensuring the financial health, sustainability, and good governance of RBLS. Working closely with the National Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and Accounts Manager, you will provide high-level financial oversight and strategic leadership.

The National Board of Trustees consists of 14 members and meets four times a year in Edinburgh. While much of the role can be carried out remotely, in-person attendance is required for Board meetings and the Annual Conference.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide high-level financial oversight, reviewing reports and monitoring the charity’s financial stability
  • Keep the Board fully informed of financial matters, clearly communicating risks, opportunities, and overall financial health
  • Provide oversight and input into the annual budgeting process
  • Assist with the preparation, review, and approval of the annual statutory accounts
  • Liaise with investment portfolio managers, including oversight of reserves and risk management
  • Liaise with the organisation’s pension provider, ensuring compliance with statutory requirements
  • Chair the Finance Committee, helping shape the charity’s three-year financial strategy and future sustainability
  • Identify and flag financial issues at an early stage, even where risks appear minor

What we’re looking for

We are keen to hear from individuals who bring senior financial expertise and a passion for using those skills to support a charitable cause.

You will ideally have:

  • A professional background as a Finance Director, Financial Controller, or similar senior financial role
  • The confidence to communicate financial information clearly to Board members with varied backgrounds
  • An understanding of charity finance, governance, and regulatory requirements
  • A strategic mindset with strong attention to detail and a long-term perspective
  • A genuine commitment to supporting veterans and their families in Scotland

What’s in it for you?

  • Make a tangible difference by applying your expertise at a pivotal moment in the charity’s strategic development
  • Gain further experience in non-profit financial leadership and governance
  • Work alongside a committed group of trustees who share a common purpose
  • Contribute directly to improving the lives of veterans and their families across Scotland
  • Receive an honorarium of up to £4,000 per annum

Time commitment

  • Board meetings: 4 per year (Saturdays, 10.30am–1.30pm, in person, Edinburgh)
  • AGM: In-person attendance required to present the annual report and accounts
  • Finance Committee: 4 meetings per year (Zoom/Teams)
  • Additional support during financial year-end preparation
  • Occasional ad hoc advice and support as required

How to express interest

If you are motivated to use your financial expertise to support a respected national charity and help shape its future, we would be delighted to hear from you.
