Who we are

We are the independent regulator for the social work, social care and children and young people workforce in Scotland. Our work means the people of Scotland can count on these services being provided by a trusted, skilled, confident and valued workforce.

We protect the public by registering this workforce, setting standards for their practice, conduct, training and education and by supporting their professional development. Where people fall below the standards of practice and conduct, we can investigate and take action.

About the role

Due to the resignation of the substantive post holder, we are recruiting to a permanent Learning and Development Manager post within the Workforce, Education and Standards Directorate. As a Learning and Development Manager you will carry out a diverse range of duties. This adds to the challenge of the role but also makes the job interesting and varied. We are looking for an exceptional individual who thrives on challenge, is versatile, and can adapt their working style to accommodate the need to change direction and move into a wide range of work areas swiftly but effectively.

You will be responsible for managing and leading the Education and Quality Assurance team and will lead and manage projects that contribute to our strategic plan.

You will provide leadership and management oversight for the team’s core business, which includes the ongoing approval and quality assurance of SSSC regulated education and training. You will also lead and contribute to, and support your team members to lead and contribute to, current project work supporting newly qualified social workers and mental health officers, amongst others.

What you need to succeed

You should:

  • have significant current or recent experience of working in or with the social service sector
  • hold a recognised degree level or equivalent qualification in a relevant professional field, preferably social work given the nature of the team’s core business
  • understand policy and legislative developments in Scotland and how they impact the social service workforce
  • have extensive experience in learning and workforce development across social work, childhood practice and specialist areas such as Mental Health Officer and Practice Learning
  • have a critical understanding of the wide range of operational demands and workforce development needs of social service workers and employers
  • understand workforce development and workforce planning
  • have demonstrable experience of identifying learning needs and designing, developing, delivering and evaluating learning activity
  • have experience of managing budgets
  • have excellent oral and written communication
  • have demonstrable project management skills.

Why work for us

We are an ambitious, enthusiastic and supportive organisation. With around 300 employees, you can really make an impact here. We offer a generous salary, flexible working arrangements, a full range of benefits, local government pension scheme and up to 43 days holiday (dependent on service).

You can find out more about the benefits of working here on our website.

Our office is in Dundee and we have an agile working policy. We encourage remote working and support a less office-based format. We are happy to discuss individual arrangements and consider agile working, depending on job requirements (such as being in the office for training events and meetings etc).
