About the role

We are looking for a dedicated solicitor to join the SSSC’s in-house corporate legal team. You will provide expert advice and guidance to teams across the organisation on a wide range of governance matters. Your role will involve interpreting and advising on both our own legislative framework and rules, and those that govern organisations and public bodies more generally.

The SSSC is an ambitious and forward-looking organisation, and the legal team plays an important part in supporting new initiatives meaning the work is engaging and varied.

You’ll make an impact by playing a key role in maintaining high standards of governance within the SSSC and will have the opportunity to develop transferable skills by contributing to policy development, advising on risk management and supporting large scale corporate projects.

The in-house legal team is distinct from our Fitness to Practise team whose work is focussed on investigating and presenting fitness to practise cases.

What you need to succeed

  • Experience of providing legal advice to clients and supporting them to make well informed pragmatic decisions.
  • A positive, can do and cheerful approach.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage and progress your own workload.
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn.

Because of the variety of legal work we deal with we value an in-house team from a range of legal backgrounds. Previous experience in the public sector is not necessary. This post may suit a solicitor from a different discipline such as private practice who is interested in adapting their skills and experience to an in-house role. Many of your key skills are transferable and your experience of managing client relations is relevant in this post – but with no fee targets to meet!

We encourage you to apply if you share our values, even if you don’t fully meet our requirements. We are a small supportive team who work closely together and will help you to learn and develop in the role.

Who we are

We are the independent regulator for the social work, social care and children and young people workforce in Scotland. Our work means the people of Scotland can count on these services being provided by a trusted, skilled, confident and valued workforce.

Why work for us

  • Make a difference – You will have the opportunity to add value by contributing towards work which makes positive change, protects people who use services in Scotland and strengthens the professionalism of the workforce.
  • Develop strong working relationships – You will have a unique opportunity to work with many colleagues across the organisation who come from a range of professional backgrounds, including colleagues at senior and executive management level.
  • Our values – At the SSSC, our organisational values guide everything that we do. You will work within a team who act with integrity and live our values, guiding us to make the right recommendations.
  • Excellent benefits – We offer a generous salary, flexible working arrangements (two days flexi leave per month), family focused benefits, local government pension scheme and up to 43 days holiday (dependent on service).
  • Agile working policy – Our office is in Dundee and we have an agile working policy and support a less office based format. We are happy to discuss individual arrangements, depending on job requirements (such as being in the office for training events and meetings etc).

The legal team is a small team who work together regularly in the office, and we also have monthly departmental meetings there.

You can find out more about these and other benefits of working here on our website.
